Born in Wellsboro to a glassmaker\, she dealt with many setbacks during her life. Only through sheer grit and a belief in the American Dream was she able to become a Hollywood movie star. During the 20s and 30s\, she as in 18 films with many notable film stars like: Marie Dressler\, Bing Crosby\, Jimmy Durante\, The Three Stooges\, Robert Young\, Hoot Gibson and Buddy Rodgers. After her movie career\, she became a nationally recognized interior decorator. Her work was featured three times in President Herbert Hoover\, General Douglas MacArthur at the Waldorf Astoria\, along with the homes of Barron Hilton and Mary Pickford. There will be 3 showings: Friday\, June 2 & Friday June 9 at 7:30 PM and on Thursday\, June 15 at 8 PM. Admission is donations to the Deane Center.

SUMMARY:EXPLORE BARBOUR ROCK TRAIL
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 15\, everyone is invited to go on an excursion from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. along Barbour Rock Trail to learn about botany and especially wildflowers of the Tioga State Forest\, and to see the Barbour Rock vista that overlooks the Pine Creek Gorge. This outing is free and open to the public.\n\n\nMeet at the Barbour Rock Trail parking area at 4 p.m.\n\n\nTo get there\, take U.S. Route 6 from either Galeton or Wellsboro. At the Burnin Barrel/Ansonia Valley Inn at 5440 Route 6\, turn off onto Colton Road and drive to the Barbour Rock Trail parking area\, which is not far from Colton Point State Park.\n\n\nThe Barbour Rock Trail is a wide\, flat\, packed gravel path accessible for people walking or using a wheelchair. It is located on the western rim of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon in the Tioga State Forest and offers one\, if not the best and most easily accessible spots from which to view the canyon.\n\n\nParticipants will make their way from the parking area down Barbour Rock Trail to the vista and return to the parking area by 6 p.m. The total distance is 1.3 miles to the vista and back.\n\n\nDCNR and Hometown Science\, a local organization\, are sponsoring this adventure.\n\n\nLeading the program are Chris Firestone\, a botanist with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry office in Wellsboro\, and Susan Schenck\, environmental education specialist with DCNR’s Hills Creek State Park Complex\, which includes nine state parks in Tioga and Potter counties.\n\n\nFirestone has been studying plants in wild and natural areas for many years.\n\n\nOnce on the trail\, participants will learn about local wildflowers\, trees and plants of the Tioga State Forest\, including Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia)\, the Commonwealth’s state flower.\n\n\n“We are striving to make this an inclusive event accessible to all\, including individuals with impaired or limited mobility\,” said Schenck. Individuals needing an ASL interpreter are asked to contact her by this Thursday\, June 8.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the diverse landscape of our moon\, explore highlands\, volcanic plains\, and moon mission landing sites. Join park staff in viewing lunar natural afeatures and discovering where moon landings took place among them. \nUnder the guidance of our volunteers and staff\, embark on an amazing telescope tour of the moon’s surface. \nNo pre-registration required. Telescopes available on a first-come\, first-serve basis for the time listed. Availability is subject to staff/volunteer availability\, weather conditions\, and crowd size limitations. \nPark Programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. Since seating is limited\, you may want to bring a chair and/or blanket \nAll programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder. \nTelescopes will not be available in the event of significant cloud-cover. \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nWe ask that visitors to the Night Sky programs to please leave their pets at home. Dim lighting\, large crowds and sensitive equipment do not create a pet-friendly environment. \nCheck the Clear Sky Chart or Astrospheric for 48-hour forecasts of cloud cover and viewing conditions.

SUMMARY:47TH ANNUAL GOD’S COUNTRY MARATHON RACE SERIES
DESCRIPTION:Have you always thought about running the God’s Country Marathon? Stop wishing and start doing!  A challenging series of race events: marathon\, half marathon\, and marathon relay held on the first Saturday of June. “Conquer the Hill” as you run the scenic route from Galeton to Coudersport. Our 48th year\, the God’s Country Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Starts at Galeton High School and ends at the Coudersport Square.   Registration opens December 1 at Active.com and follow on Facebook!

SUMMARY:Movie Premier: "Kitty" Grit & Mirrors
DESCRIPTION:Premiering on June 2 at 7:30 PM in the Coolidge Theatre is Gale Largey’s brand new film about Wellsboro’s first movie star! “Kitty” Grit & Mirrors is the inspiring story of Kathryn Crawford. Born in Wellsboro to a glassmaker\, she dealt with many setbacks during her life. Only through sheer grit and a belief in the American Dream was she able to become a Hollywood movie star. During the 20s and 30s\, she as in 18 films with many notable film stars like: Marie Dressler\, Bing Crosby\, Jimmy Durante\, The Three Stooges\, Robert Young\, Hoot Gibson and Buddy Rodgers. After her movie career\, she became a nationally recognized interior decorator. Her work was featured three times in President Herbert Hoover\, General Douglas MacArthur at the Waldorf Astoria\, along with the homes of Barron Hilton and Mary Pickford. There will be 3 showings: Friday\, June 2 & Friday June 9 at 7:30 PM and on Thursday\, June 15 at 8 PM. Admission is donations to the Deane Center.

DESCRIPTION:Experience the wonder of the night sky at Cherry Springs State Park through a laser-guided tour conducted by park staff. \nExplore the constellations of Leo the Lion and Ursa Major (Big Bear)\, and observe the planets Mars and Venus. Listen as we recount the legends and myths surrounding these mysterious patterns in the sky. Learn about park history\, current use\, and the importance of dark night skies. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required. Should we need to cancel or modify a program due to weather\, etc.\, we will email all registered participants. Optional registration will open 45 days before the program. \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nPrograms occur at Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. Since seating is limited\, you may want to bring a chair and/or blanket. \nWe ask that park visitors please leave their pets at home. Dim lighting\, large crowds and sensitive equipment do not create a pet-friendly environment. \nAll programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder. \nCheck the Clear Sky Chart or Astrospheric for 48-hour forecasts of cloud cover and viewing conditions. \nPhoto courtesy of Universe Today.
