SUMMARY:"Post-Its" Atrium Gallery exhibit of Josh Crane's work
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a retrospective exhibit of Josh Crane’s pen and ink artwork in the Atrium Gallery for August titled\, “Post Its.” The exhibit will open on Saturday\, August 5th at noon. However\, the reception for this and the Main Gallery exhibit will be held on Sunday\, August 13th from 2-4PM\, so that the artists’ families may attend. The reception is free and open to the public\, and light refreshments will be provided.\nJoshua Samuel Crane was born Jan. 3rd\, 1988\, at Corning Hospital. He was the 8th child of Gloria and David Crane. Throughout his life he lived in Tioga\, Antrim\, Covington\, Wellsboro\, and Corning. Josh loved artists such as Alex Grey\, Salvador Dali and Van Gogh. One of his favorite pieces of art was the tryptic “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Hieronymus Bosch. Artists that pushed their craft and had something to say were of high value to him. Mediums he worked with included chalk pastels\, pen and ink\, oil paints and tattoo.\nJoshua would also create sidewalk art with chalk. He would put hours into this work knowing it would end up sun-bleached\, washed away and stepped on by the public. Sometimes this performative act was to help a friend who had a business; other times he would do it in the idea of the transitory nature of material life. This is in the same vein as the sand mandalas made by Buddhists\, that they would destroy after making. On the opposite end of the spectrum\, he also was a tattooist\, which meant leaving a permanent mark on a person’s skin to display throughout their life. No surface was off limits to the message he was compelled to send. Big\, small\, elaborate or simple\, he was going to share his thoughts intended to spread healing and love to the world.\nJoshua passed on June 28\, 2022\, at the age of 34. He had endless potential and that “What if?” factor about him that will stay with us all. A philosopher he shared a quote from not long before he died was Marcus Aurelius\, who once said “Each of us lives only now\, this brief instant. The rest has been lived already\, or it is impossible to see.” In life Josh was more interested in putting his work in coffee houses than galleries as he felt he could affect the everyday man that doesn’t necessarily think about actively seeking out the arts. But Josh’s family agreed to share his art with the audience at the Gmeiner to help us push the envelope of what is considered “worthy” of a gallery. We hope that you will come to see this display to appreciate Josh’s vision and honor his memory.

SUMMARY:Alice Mickey Hard: A Retrospective Main Gallery Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is thrilled to announce a widely varied exhibit in the Main Gallery for August\, “Alice Mickey Hard: A Retrospective.” This exhibit will feature some of the work of beloved local art teacher\, Alice Mickey Hard\, who passed away in 2022. Exhibit guests will be able to view Alice’s incredible ability to see the beauty in everything from a very early age\, as well as her gift of being able to express that beauty through art. There will be pieces in the exhibit from the 1930s through the 2010s\, in ceramics and clay\, fiber arts\, acrylics\, pen and ink\, batik\, quilting\, watercolor\, pastels and more. The exhibit will open on Saturday\, August 5th at noon. However\, the reception for this and the Atrium exhibit will be held on Sunday\, August 13th from 2-4PM\, so that the artists’ families may attend. The reception is free and open to the public\, and light refreshments will be provided.\nAlice Carlson Mickey Hard was born in Lorraine\, Ohio on December 8\, 1931. She married Max Mickey in 1954. Alice and Max moved to Wellsboro in 1959 and had three children: John Mickey\, Judy Watson\, and Ann Miller. Alice began teaching art in the Wellsboro Area School District in 1967. Before she retired in 1994\, she was named Head of the Art Department and Teacher of the Year in 1987. She was a member of the Williamsport Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen\, Surface Design\, Pennsylvania Council of the Arts\, and a charter member of the Wellsboro Art Support Group. In October\, 1983\, she had a batik printed in the September issue of Fiber Arts. It was a commissioned batik Peace banner that now hangs in a cathedral in Budapest\, Hungary. Alice contributed to many Vesta shows and other art shows at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center and around Wellsboro. Her first husband Max passed in 2009. Alice remarried in 2012 to Larry Hard. He passed away in 2014. Alice was a prolific artist throughout her life until she passed away at 90 in 2022.\nCome to the Gmeiner in August to see the amazing talent of a Wellsboro artist who is sorely missed by family\, friends\, and former students. Some original works of art will be for sale. Alice’s family has also commissioned some small items printed with her original works that will be for sale during this exhibit.\nThis display is appropriate for all ages\, and there will be a scavenger hunt activity for children. The Gmeiner is located at 134 Main Street\, Wellsboro\, behind the Green Free Library. We are open from 12-6PM Tuesday through Sunday and admission to the gallery is always free.

SUMMARY:Greggie and The Jets A tribute to Elton John
DESCRIPTION:You’ll forget he’s Greg Vadimsky from Somerville\, New Jersey\, when he plays Elton John in Greggie and The Jets. Greg Vadimsky is a man of many talents. He’s a published author of “100 Years of Horror\, Vol. 1 (1919-1945)\,” with three more entertaining volumes in the pipeline. He claims inspiration by his grandmother Sophia’s weekend airings of “Creature Feature” and “Fright Theater\,” hosted by the legendary “Dr. Paul Bearer” on Channel 44\, Tampa Bay. Vadimsky became a professional musician with his first band\, Spectre\, which went on to have a record contract with original songs just as he was turning 18. For almost 26 years\, he and Brian “Big-B” Arnold\, on drums and vocals\, have toured the United States and United Kingdom as Greg & Brian. A veteran of Ball State University’s jazz program\, with credits including Pat Benatar and Bad Company\, Arnold is also drums and vocals in their Elton John tribute\, Greggie and The Jets. About other members of Greggie and The Jets\, Vadimsky said\, “My brother Gary\, who’s seven years younger\, has been with me since Spectre days. He’s simply phenomenal on guitar and vocals. His wife\, Lori\, has just joined us on backing vocals and percussion\, and is a great addition to the band. “The rest of the band is filled out by Patrick Green on keyboards and vocals\, who’s a guy who can really hear the difficult harmonies and perfect them. “Johnny Lawson\, on bass and vocals\, specializes in recreating the difficult bass lines of the late Dee Murray. He’s performed with so many groups he’s lost count\, but among them are The Marshall Tucker Band and Gary Wright (‘Dream Weaver’).” \nIn their shows\, they don’t necessarily play Elton’s songbook chronologically but do share with the audience the stories Elton and Bernie Taupin have told about writing them. Expect to hear old favorites as well as deep album cuts — everything from “Levon” to “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and “I’m Still Standing.” “We are told at every show that we sonically re-create how the classic recordings sounded\,” said Vadimsky. “The music is the most important thing\, with the outfits just being the icing on the cake.” There are at least two changes of glitzy costumes\, glasses\, mohair suits and electric boots. \n  \nTickets are $30 and we will have table seating which is the standard for our BYOB shows. There are General Admissions risers located in the back of the theatre as well as the opportunity to rent a table located in the middle and front of the theatre. A small table is an additional $5 and seats 2-4 people. A large table is an additional $10 and seats 6-8 people. The only way to rent a table is to call our office at 570-724-6220. If you are sitting at someone else’s table that has already been reserved\, please write their name in the prompt listed in the buyer questions.

SUMMARY:Wellsboro Community Concert Association presenting Autumn Sun
DESCRIPTION:This Friday\, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m.\, the free outdoor summer concert series will feature Autumn Sun performing a mix of Americana\, progressive and folk music on the outdoor stage at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro. The outdoor stage is located on the Central Avenue side of the building. \nThe Deane Center’s summer outdoor series includes concerts by different artists from throughout the area on consecutive Fridays\, now until Sept. 1 thanks to the support and generosity of the Wellsboro Community Concert Association and Ward Manufacturing. \nThe Ithaca Music scene introduced Autumn Sun in 2020 as its brand new pandemic baby and described the band’s music as “blurring the lines between Americana and New Folk. Autumn Sun reaches deep into the heart…original songs with substance and story…classic folk songs given new life and made fresh with harmony and haunting bold new instrumentation.” \nAutumn Sun includes five musicians. Susan Murphy is a New York City composer lyricist whose works have been performed from Lincoln Center to Off Broadway theatres\, to national theatre tours and numerous folk rock bands. She plays keyboards\, pipes and whistles. Murphy now brings her originals to Autumn Sun\, along with her unique brand of instrumentation and color to the mix. \nMargaret Ball is often heard playing her fiddle for English Country Dances. Autumn Sun stole her from the world of traditional playing. Check out her heartfelt solos\, great fiddle rhythm\, and beautiful back up harmonies. \nCurtis Kretz is Autumn Sun’s pulse on drums and percussion\, keeping the band tight and right. From folk to rock\, his tasty beats are beautiful and perfect for every song Autumn Sun presents. \nLead vocalist Sue Horowitz is breaking out originals on national folk radio charts and national tours. She brings her beautiful vocals\, originals\, and great guitar playing to the band. \nOriginally from North Carolina\, Joseph Rayle played everything from Old Time to Americana to full on rock. Now in central New York\, Rayle has been bringing his bass lines to bands such as Urban Horse Thieves\, Answer The Muse\, and his latest venture with Autumn Sun. \nAutumn Sun is rising. Be there. \nAudience members are welcome to bring lawn chairs and sit on the grassy area in front of the outdoor stage or on Central Avenue\, which will be closed to traffic between Main Street and the Warehouse Theatre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. \nIf weather becomes an issue\, this free concert will be cancelled. \nThe last three free outdoor concerts in the series coming up on Fridays at 6 p.m. are: Sweats on Aug. 18; Houston Baker on Aug. 25 and Joe Stanky & The Cadets on Sept. 1. \nFor more information about the free concert series\, call the Deane Center at 570-724-6220\, email office@deanecenter.com or visit deanecenter.com.

SUMMARY:Whey Jennings
DESCRIPTION:Whey Jennings performs a tribute show to his grandfather\, Waylon Jennings. Whey Jennings grew up in a family full of country music royalty. His grandfather\, the legendary Waylon Jennings and grandmother Jessi Cloter both had major success in the major music charts for decades. Jennings is a “rough around the edges\, unpolished singer” with a voice as big as Texas. \nJennings is the oldest son of his mother Katherine and father Terry Jennings. Whey has always had a deep love for music since the first time he stepped foot on stage. Whey was just a boy when\, at one of his grandfathers show\, Jessi Cloter left a microphone on a chair backstage after the performing “Storms Never Last”. Young Whey picked up the microphone and pranced out onto the stage and began singing “Mamma Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”. Whey’s grandpa Waylon shouted out “Hey hold up there Hoss…wait for me!” Waylon went to pickin’ and when the song was finished\, the crowd went nuts. It was on that day that Whey fell in love with music and as they say…the rest is history. \nTicket Sales OpenMonday\, May 1\, 2023$35 Front Row$30 Priority seating$25 General Admission(you must pay an additional $8.00 admission fee to enter the fairgrounds in addition to your concert ticket)

SUMMARY:How Meteor Showers Work
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a short\, fun\, interactive activity that helps explain where the Perseid meteor showers come from.  This game provides an intro to this weekend’s Perseid Meteor Shower\, and is a great way to ease into the following Night Sky Tour program. \nAll ages – kids\, teens\, and adults. \nRegistration is not required for this fun\, family-friendly\, and free event. \n—- \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nPark programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. Since seating is limited\, you may want to bring a chair and/or blanket. \nWe ask that park visitors please leave their pets at home. Dim lighting\, large crowds and sensitive equipment do not create a pet-friendly environment. \nAll programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder. \nCheck the Clear Sky Chart or Astrospheric for 48-hour forecasts of cloud cover and viewing conditions.
