SUMMARY:Private Dark Sky Telescope Tour: Shamans and Saints
DESCRIPTION:The Perseids are coming! While the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower is mid-August\, meteors can be observed any time from late July through the month of August.  As the Earth intersects with the orbit of dust particles left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle in 1992\, visitors will flock to Cherry Springs State Park for a view of the spectacular results.  Watch the meteors streak across the sky as you listen to myths and stories surrounding historical beliefs about shooting stars and constellations. \n\nJoin us at Cherry Spring State Park to take in the splendor of a gold-rated International Dark Skies Park. Those interested in experiencing a more personalized\, small-group telescope tour of the night sky can join North Star Outdoor Guides for a private telescope tour of the night sky.  Participants in this program will be guaranteed ample telescope time without long waits; includes a discussion of the importance of dark skies\, a laser-guided tour of various constellations\, and telescope viewing.  Objects which may be viewed include planets\, nebulae\, red giants\, globular clusters\, galaxies\, and binary star systems. \nGroup Size: max. capacity 16\, not including children age 5 and under \nBring: Chairs\, bug spray\, and a small red flashlight. (ONLY RED LIGHTS ARE ALLOWED ON THE VIEWING FIELD.) \nDress: Dress warmly for cooler than anticipated night temperatures.  The field is at a higher elevation and exposed. \nRegistration Required – Registration will open 45 days before the program when possible and close at 3pm 2 days before the program (or when full). You may put your name on a waitlist if the program is full. \nFee: $25/person (includes a $3 non-refundable processing fee); Children (age 5 and under) Free \n*** Payment is required within 24 hrs of your registration\, or your registration will be removed.  Payment can be made by following the link provided in the email you will receive after registering *** \n  \nThe program will be cancelled in the event of rain or overcast skies. \nWeather Policy: If weather or predicted overcast skies result in us having to cancel the program you will receive a refund minus the $3.00 non-refundable processing fee. (You will receive email notification of any decision to cancel the program in its entirety by 3:30 pm the day before the event)  We will do our best to utilize weather forecasts and the Cherry Springs Clear Dark Skies Chart (http://www.cleardarksky.com/c/ChrSprPkPAkey.html) to pre-determine if a program will be possible.  However\, due to the fickle nature of weather our best-made efforts may be thwarted\, and the sky may be overcast during your scheduled tour.  In the event\, your guide is unable to show you at least 3 deep sky objects you will receive a 50% refund. If preferred\, you can opt to receive a coupon\, valued at the fee you paid\, to be used towards a future program (good for two years) in lieu of a partial refund. \nParticipant Cancellations: If you choose to cancel your reservation before 3pm\, two days prior to the event you will be refunded minus the $3.00/participant\, non-refundable processing fee.  No refunds are given for no-shows or cancellations by the participant after 3pm\, two days prior to the event. \n— \nQuestions? SUMMARY:OPEN MIC NIGHT AT THE GMEINER
DESCRIPTION:Calling all Musicians! The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a series of free Open Mic Nights for Musicians. These will be held on the third Wednesday of each month starting on March 15th\, from 7-9PM. Musicians of all ages are invited to participate\, and all acoustic styles are welcome. The open mic concept is very welcoming and relaxed. Each musician or group will have up to 15 minutes to share their music with the audience. We hope to have everyone from beginners to seasoned performers participate.\nMusicians should arrive by 6:30 in order to sign up for a performance time. These will be arranged on a first-come\, first-serve basis. If a musician isn’t comfortable with a full 15 minutes\, we will accommodate that as well. Performers should bring their own instruments\, unless they plan to play the Gmeiner’s piano. There will also be a basic sound system available. If all of the 15-minute slots do not fill up\, we may end the evening with a jam session. This is a great opportunity to have fun and meet other local musicians.\nIf you are a music lover\, please come out to enjoy the performances and cheer on the brave souls who step up to the mic. Admission is free\, and there is plenty of space for an audience. For further information or if you have any questions\, contact Anne at 814-203-7581 or Carrie at director@gmeinerartculturalcenter.org.

SUMMARY:"Name the Spider” contest
DESCRIPTION:She wowed them from the start\, with her starburst eyelashes\, Miss America smile\, and impossibly long legs – all eight of them. Wellsboro’s glamorous new resident – an outsized spider fashioned from gears\, wrenches\, hay rakes. and other metal parts – arrived with “Metal Metamorphic\,” the Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center’s April exhibit of metal artwork by sculptor Mark English of Westfield\, PA. \nThe metallic beauty now has a forever home at the Gmeiner\, where you’ll find her comfortably nesting in the front flowerbed\, the prime spot she occupied during the show. It took a trio of local art lovers – current and recent Gmeiner docents – to make it happen. Noticing how the unconventional sculpture delighted visitors of all ages and stopped passersby\, Holly Morris\, Kathy Plumley\, and Karen Meyers pooled their resources to purchase the piece for the center’s permanent collection. \n“It was definitely a stroke of genius to put it out front\,” says Meyers. “People were taking pictures of their kids with the spider\, then going in to the exhibit with them\, then finding out about all the programs the Gmeiner has for people of all ages. So\, we thought\, let’s make this permanent.” \nGmeiner Director Carrie Heath\, welcoming the acquisition\, says she will launch a “Name the Spider” contest in August: “Children are invited to come and give their suggestions for names on our ‘Idea Web.’ At the end of the month\, all the name ideas will be considered and the winner will be selected. So if you think you have a creative\, ingenious name for our new metallic friend\, please let us know!” Heath notes that the Gmeiner will be open from 12-6 PM Saturday\, August 5th through Sunday August 27th (closed on Mondays) for the August exhibits. \nThe spider’s creator has this to say about his art (artinthewilds.org/english). “My materials\, much like people\, are often imperfect\, showing signs of wear\, yet having a story and waiting to be transformed.” Children visiting the Gmeiner and imagining names for English’s arachnid may wish to weave their own web of stories around Wellsboro’s winsome newcomer. \nThe Gmeiner is located at 134 Main Street\, Wellsboro\, behind the Green Free Library. We are open from 12-6PM Tuesday through Sunday and admission to the gallery is always free.

SUMMARY:You Are Never Alone Poker Run - Veterans In The Wild
DESCRIPTION:The You Are Never Alone Poker Run is a motorcycle (+other vehicle) ride to raise money for our Veterans In The Wild projects.\nThis year we are working directly with local veteran and community member\, Rex Rathbun. Rex is currently battling cancer and is working with TIMQ: Veterans In The Wild while undergoing his treatments.
