They include “Fightin’ Side” (1986)\, “Heart Moving Melodies (1987)\, “Band For Hire” (1989)\, “The Switch Is On” (1991)\, “Ridin’ High” (1994) and “Sing Me Back Home” (2000).\n\n\nTheir most famous tune is “The Dancing Mouse\,” which has inspired thousands of fans to get up and dance.\n\n\nAnother of the band’s original songs\, “Polka Dancer” was featured on a Grammy-winning recording by Brave Combo\, a Denton\, Texas-based quintet that has perfected a world music mix that includes salsa\, meringue\, rock and polka.\n\n\n“Some of the guys have been with me for 30 and 40 years\,” Stanky said. “We just performed at the Bethlehem Musikfest and will soon be playing at the Mohegan Casino Resort in Wilkes-Barre for their Oktoberfest. Also\, we are doing work with Jimmy Sturr and his 18-time Grammy Award winning polka music band\, playing at dances\, weddings\, anniversary and birthday parties and other private affairs.\n\n\n“Watch for our shows on WVIA and Service Electric in the coming months\,” Stanky said.\n\n\n“I started playing with a country band and then went to polka about 40 years ago in Nanticoke\, Pennsylvania\,” Stanky said. “Polka music is happy music. Our goal is to make people happy.”\n\n\nAs a studio musician\, Stanky also records with other country and polka bands.\n\n\nAudience members are welcome to bring lawn chairs and sit on the grassy area in front of the outdoor stage or on Central Avenue\, which will be closed to traffic between Main Street and the Warehouse Theatre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.\n\n\nFor more information\, call the Deane Center at 570-724-6220.

SUMMARY:Nature at Night: Owl Prowl
DESCRIPTION:Whoooo’s there? \nAfter a half-hour presentation exploring owl traits and identification\, we will hit the trail to listen (and look) for owls! They can be a little shy\, so be prepared to silently stand still at times. \nWear suitable footwear for potentially damp grass\, bring a red-light flashlight if you have one. Walk will be about 1 mile over mostly level grass and gravel surfaces. \n—- \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nPark programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. Since seating is limited\, you may want to bring a chair and/or blanket. \nWe ask that park visitors please leave their pets at home. Dim lighting\, large crowds and sensitive equipment do not create a pet-friendly environment. \nAll programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder.

SUMMARY:Finding The Right Word Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce the return of local favorites Steve and Rita Bower for a Main Gallery exhibit titled “Finding the Right Word.” This exhibit will include new acrylic paintings\, monoprints\, clay sculptures\, altered books\, drawings\, and mixed media pieces from the couple. The artists say\, “We have new pieces of art that tell something about our inner journey in expressing ourselves.  The mediums speak to us in voices that lead us to the new destinations. We hope to share these ‘travels’ with friends and family.” The exhibit will open on Saturday\, September 9th with a reception from 2-4PM. The reception is free and open to the public\, and light refreshments will be provided. Steve and Rita hope to see many old friends and students at the reception. \nSteve and Rita Bower both attended Mansfield University earning B.S. and Master’s Degrees in Art Education.  Rita Bower taught art for thirty-five years in the Southern Tioga School District. Rita loves using a variety of art mediums and techniques to express herself in her art-making. She draws inspiration from traveling\, study\, sharing ideas\, and the connectedness of these in everyday living. Rita participates in juried\, group and individual shows\, as well as teaching student and adult art classes. She loves to learn by doing and to see what the materials around her want to become. \nBoth Rita and Steve are now retired from teaching full time and together they have continued to create and exhibit their artwork professionally. Steve worked in different school districts\, including Southern Tioga. From 2001 to 2008\, Steve also served as an adjunct professor at Mansfield University teaching Drawing and Water Base Media. Steve worked successfully as a professional artist for fifteen years\, exhibiting his paintings in the American Watercolor Society as well as numerous national and regional exhibitions. In recent years\, Steve turned his attention to creating ceramic and steel sculptures and acrylic paintings. Steve considers his career to be a long and consistent pursuit of excellence and the drive to explore and take risks. \nThis display is appropriate for all ages\, and there will be a scavenger hunt activity for children. The Gmeiner is located at 134 Main Street\, Wellsboro\, behind the Green Free Library. We are open from 12-6PM Tuesday through Sunday and admission to the gallery is always free.
