SUMMARY:TANNERIES OF TIOGA COUNTY PRESENTATION AT THE GMEINER
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a presentation on the history of tanneries in Tioga County by local historian Betsy Hale.  Tanneries were places where leather was made from animal hides. This presentation will be held twice to allow people with differing schedules to attend. The first presentation will be on Thursday\, October 19th at 2PM and the second will be on Tuesday\, October 24th at 6PM. Admission is free and open to the public. \nTanneries existed in Tioga County since the early 1800s\, soon after the county was formed\, until the last one closed in 2004 — almost 200 years of their existence here in the county.  At one time there were nineteen different ones in operation.  Many were very small but others claimed to be the biggest in the world.  This presentation will give an accounting of their existence.  Many of the records are long lost but\, through research\, this presentation will give a history about the leather industry in the county and the demise of its existence. \nBetsy Hale is the President of the Westfield Historical Society.  Last year she gave a talk at the B&S Railroad gathering in Addison\, New York about the tanneries along the B&S and WAG railroads.  For this October presentation\, she will be focusing only on the tanneries located in Tioga County\, Pennsylvania.  The Westfield Historical Society has a vast collection of items from the former Eberle Tannery/Westfield Tannery\, some of which Betsy presented at the program in conjunction with Develop Tioga at the demolition of the Westfield tannery buildings in 2019. \nBetsy\, a native of West Virginia\, has lived in PA for over thirty years and has a love of history\, serving as President of the Westfield Historical Society for the last six years.  She lives in Westfield with her husband\, Michael Hale.  Besides local history\, her interests include genealogy\, reading\, crocheting\, quilting and spending time with her grandchildren. \nFor further information about the presentation or the Gmeiner\, contact Carrie at 570-724-1917 or director@gmeinerartculturalcenter.org.

SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead: The Mansfield Connection
DESCRIPTION:How did Mansfield State College alum Ronald Keith Hartman – a music major and aspiring singer – end up with a role in Night of the Living Dead (1968)\, an iconic\, low-budget\, and hugely influential horror film famous for its graphic portrayal of flesh-eating zombies? Why did the film’s director\, George Romero\, consider Hartman to be “our celebrity . . . our showbiz cat”?\nAnd why did Hartman choose to perform under the name “Keith Wayne” for what proved to be his one and only film? All this and more will be revealed at a special History Center Halloween presentation on October 29 at 2:00 p.m.\n\nNote: The presentation will include film clips with brief scenes that some audience members may find mildly disturbing and/or somewhat gruesome. But after all\, it’s Halloween\, and zombies will be zombies!\n

SUMMARY:Seasons of the Soul Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce the November Main Gallery exhibit “Seasons of the Soul” photography by Shannon Davis. It will open with a reception from 2-4PM on Saturday\, November 4th. The reception is free and open to the public\, and light refreshments will be served. This is Shannon’s first solo exhibit. It includes color\, black and white\, and kaleidoscopic photos. It will be on display until Sunday\, November 26th.\nShannon graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1999 and has been taking photographs since her early teens. She loved photography class and developing her own photos in high school. Shannon has always taken tons of photos\, even back in the old film days. She has spent the last twenty years working in Ansonia for the Mountain Trail Horse Center\, the Burning Barrel Bar\, Pine Creek Outfitters\, and currently Ole’ Covered Wagon Tours as a driver. Her work in the beautiful Pine Creek Valley has given her access to many unique perspectives and situations.\nShannon’s “Seasons of the Soul” display is a collection of images from the last decade – usually just a moment in time in the superfast pace of life. Shannon finds that the little things can hold the most beauty. Most of her photographs are taken using that camera we all have these days – a cell phone. Shannon states that it seems sometimes the season of change is the only constant. Shannon’s photography can be seen on Facebook or Instagram under Grand Shanyon Photography.\n\nhttps://gmeinerartculturalcenter.org/upcoming-events/

SUMMARY:The Canyon Waterfall Geology Hike
DESCRIPTION:Register by Phone On or Before Thursday\, Nov. 2 for The Canyon Waterfall Geology Hike on Saturday\, Nov. 4  \nBased on the response to this hike in June\, it’s being offered again! Please note\, this is an encore and will be a repeat of the same hike and excellent information provided on the last hike. \nExplore the waterfalls along the lower Turkey Path on your quest to unlock the geologic secrets of the PA Grand Canyon. The one-mile round trip hike up about 400 vertical feet (half way) of the trail will be led by both park staff and professional geologists from DNCR’s Bureau of Geological Survey. The hike begins at the base of the canyon\, where the Lock Haven Formation is exposed. These rocks were deposited approximately 380 million years ago as sediment on the edge of an ancient sea and contain fossils of marine organisms. As the hike progresses\, the exposed rock will be progressively younger and transition into the shoreline and alluvial plane deposits of the Catskill Formation\, effectively transporting participants through time and space of the geologic history of the gorge. \nThis program is well-suited for those curious about the ancient past of the gorge and those willing and able to complete the strenuous hike. Registrants will meet by 9am in the Darling Run parking lot for the Pine Creek Trail (rail trail)\, be bussed approximately 3.5 miles to the base of the trail below Leonard Harrison State Park where the program will begin. After a brief introduction\, the group will climb slowly\, learning along the way to a point about ½ way up the path and near the upper waterfall.  Participants should wear proper footwear and layered clothing for the hike. A small backpack\, water and snacks are also encouraged. Those interested should register online or by calling 570-724-3061. Spaces are limited and the deadline to register is Thursday Nov. 2. In the event of inclement weather\, this program will be cancelled.

On Nov. 6\, 7\, 9 and 10\, the talks will take place in the studio of the Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center in Wellsboro and on Nov. 8 at the History Center on Main Street in Mansfield.\nTopics will include history and heritage\, writing\, gardening\, filmmaking\, health\, nature\, science and journalism. Anna Kelsey\, Daniel’s daughter\, who taught at Mansfield Normal School\, founded one of the state’s first kindergartens\, and served as a missionary in Alaska\, reminded us of Tioga County’s long history of people sharing their experience and knowledge.”\n“So in the spirit of Daniel and Anna Kelsey\, as well as the Wellsboro Chautauqua\, which held one-week programs here between 1916 and 1929\, we invited our new neighbors and acquaintances to give talks at the first Kelsey Academy\,” Nancy said. “We’ve been very happy\, but not surprised\, with the positive response.”\nFor further information email kelseyacademytioga@yahoo.com or tioga.lifelonglearning@yahoo.com.

DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is thrilled to announce a continuing education opportunity offered by Phil and Nancy Hesser\, the Kelsey Academy of Tioga (KAT)\, a one-week program of talks on a variety of subjects to promote lifelong learning for our neighbors by our neighbors.\nKAT’s inaugural program will offer 12 sessions showcasing the experiences and ideas of a cross-section of people in the county. All sessions are free with no reservations needed.\n“The Kelsey Academy of Tioga takes its name and purpose from two generations of the Kelsey family\,” Phil said. “From ‘Squire’ Daniel Kelsey\, one of the founders of the Wellsboro Academy\, we learned about the borough creating its first school as a community venture.
