DESCRIPTION:Once again\, HG provides a glorious afternoon of music as soloists and audience members join to sing the Christmas portion of G.F. Handel’s triumphant oratorio. Dr. Peggy Dettwiler conducts the event this year with soloists from the Mansfield University music department. Three of this year’s soloists are recent graduates\, and one is currently a junior.\nThe string quartet is from State College\, and local musician Marian Miller is returning to the keyboard.\nAudience members are invited to sing the choruses. Scores are available upon entrance\, or you may bring your own. Of course\, you may also sit back and listen to your friends and neighbors present this incredible work.\nThe event began and continues as a fundraiser for the HG Children’s Choral Program. Fittingly\, when the MESSIAH was first presented in London 1743 it too was as a fundraiser for the newly opened Foundling Hospital\, a home for unwanted children.) DESCRIPTION:The Tiadaghton Audubon Society\, based in Wellsboro\, is hosting two Christmas Bird Counts during the winter of 2023-2024. The Cowanesque Circle bird count will be on Saturday\, Dec. 16 and the annual Wellsboro-Mansfield Circle bird count on Monday\, Jan. 1. Everyone can participate in one or both counts.\n\n\nBy Saturday\, Dec. 9\, those interested in taking part in the Dec. 16 and/or Jan. 1 bird counts are asked to contact the Tiadaghton Audubon Society to be assigned an area by emailing tasmember@yahoo.com or by calling Sean and Robin Minnick at 570-948-9052. At least 10 volunteers are needed per circle. Each participant will count every bird they see as he/she/they follow their assigned route.\n\n\nBoth the Cowanesque and Mansfield-Wellsboro Circle bird count volunteers will get their area assignments via email. “Anyone interested is welcome to contact me for more information\,” said Sean Minnick\, a Tiadaghton Audubon Society member.\n\n\nEach individual count is performed in a “count circle” with a diameter of 15 miles (24.14 kilometres). At least 10 volunteers\, including a compiler to manage things\, count in each circle. Each participant will follow an assigned route\, which changes little from year to year\, and count every bird they see.\n\n\nThe Cowanesque Circle is centered on Cowanesque Lake and has a radius of 7.5 miles\, which covers the following areas: North – Pinnacle State Park in N.Y.; South – Ives Run Campground; West – Osceola; and East – East Lawrence Road and Woodford Road.\n\n\nThe Wellsboro-Mansfield Circle is centered on the intersection of Whitneyville and Charleston roads with a radius of 7.5 miles\, covering the following areas: North – Ives Run Campground; South – Arnot and South Elk Road; West – Route 6 and Heise Run Road; and East – Commonwealth University in Mansfield (Mansfield University).\n\n\n“We pair a novice with an experienced birder\, if possible. People who have never participated before but are interested and comfortable with going out on their own are welcome to help\,” Minnick said. “It might be fun for a family or people living in the same household to participate together.”\n\n\nThose who do not want to drive an assigned route but live in a circle area can count birds at their home bird feeders.\n\n\nIt is not necessary to be a member of either the Tiadaghton or the National Audubon Society to participate in the Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count\, which occurs across America between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5 every year.\n\n\nFrank Chapman started the Christmas Bird Census in 1900. Today\, this community science project is an important resource and tool for conservation.\n\n\nTioga County\, through the Tiadaghton Audubon Society\, has been represented in the count every year since 1968\, four years before the chapter was chartered in 1972. Founded in 1906 with 23 members\, it is officially the oldest chapter in Pennsylvania. The Tiadaghton name was selected in 1953.

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with This is My Quest’s veterans outreach director\, Travis McConnell\, we will be offering an art class for veterans on Tuesday\, December 19th at 6PM. Each veteran will be given a mask and a variety of art materials to create their own “mask” to bring their inner thoughts to light. Art therapy has been proven to be an effective way for veterans to express trauma that they cannot find the words for.\nThis class is open to any veteran\, male or female\, combat or noncombat\, from any generation. SUMMARY:Presentation on the Third Pennsylvania Bird Atlas
DESCRIPTION:On December 20\, 2023 the Tiadaghton Audubon will host a presentation from a volunteer from Hawk Mountain on the Third Pennsylvania Bird Atlas at 6PM in the Board room/ Old Music Room in the Wellsboro Administration Building across for Wellsboro High School. \n  \nThe purpose of this meeting is to  inform potential volunteers of the who\, what\, where and why for the Pennsylvania Bird Atlas (PBA3). \nPennsylvania’s Bird Atlas (PBA3) is a five year statewide inventory of birds breeding and overwintering in the state. The PBA3 begins January 1\, 2024\, and will run through early 2029. This will be PA’s 3rd atlas\, following atlases conducted in the 1980s and early 2000s. The PBA3 will rely on thousands of volunteers to document species and breeding behaviors across the state. The results of the PBA3 will help detect population and distributional changes for the birds of PA – information that is critical for designating species of conservation concern and informing land management and protection. This presentation will outline why we conduct atlases\, how the PBA3 will work\, and how anyone can participate.

DESCRIPTION:The Tiadaghton Audubon Society\, based in Wellsboro\, is hosting two Christmas Bird Counts during the winter of 2023-2024. The Cowanesque Circle bird count will be on Saturday\, Dec. 16 and the annual Wellsboro-Mansfield Circle bird count on Monday\, Jan. 1. Everyone can participate in one or both counts.\n\n\nBy Saturday\, Dec. 9\, those interested in taking part in the Dec. 16 and/or Jan. 1 bird counts are asked to contact the Tiadaghton Audubon Society to be assigned an area by emailing tasmember@yahoo.com or by calling Sean and Robin Minnick at 570-948-9052. At least 10 volunteers are needed per circle. Each participant will count every bird they see as he/she/they follow their assigned route.\n\n\nBoth the Cowanesque and Mansfield-Wellsboro Circle bird count volunteers will get their area assignments via email. “Anyone interested is welcome to contact me for more information\,” said Sean Minnick\, a Tiadaghton Audubon Society member.\n\n\nEach individual count is performed in a “count circle” with a diameter of 15 miles (24.14 kilometres). At least 10 volunteers\, including a compiler to manage things\, count in each circle. Each participant will follow an assigned route\, which changes little from year to year\, and count every bird they see.\n\n\nThe Cowanesque Circle is centered on Cowanesque Lake and has a radius of 7.5 miles\, which covers the following areas: North – Pinnacle State Park in N.Y.; South – Ives Run Campground; West – Osceola; and East – East Lawrence Road and Woodford Road.\n\n\nThe Wellsboro-Mansfield Circle is centered on the intersection of Whitneyville and Charleston roads with a radius of 7.5 miles\, covering the following areas: North – Ives Run Campground; South – Arnot and South Elk Road; West – Route 6 and Heise Run Road; and East – Commonwealth University in Mansfield (Mansfield University).\n\n\n“We pair a novice with an experienced birder\, if possible. People who have never participated before but are interested and comfortable with going out on their own are welcome to help\,” Minnick said. “It might be fun for a family or people living in the same household to participate together.”\n\n\nThose who do not want to drive an assigned route but live in a circle area can count birds at their home bird feeders.\n\n\nIt is not necessary to be a member of either the Tiadaghton or the National Audubon Society to participate in the Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count\, which occurs across America between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5 every year.\n\n\nFrank Chapman started the Christmas Bird Census in 1900. Today\, this community science project is an important resource and tool for conservation.\n\n\nTioga County\, through the Tiadaghton Audubon Society\, has been represented in the count every year since 1968\, four years before the chapter was chartered in 1972. Founded in 1906 with 23 members\, it is officially the oldest chapter in Pennsylvania. The Tiadaghton name was selected in 1953.
