SUMMARY:IN AWE OF ENGLAND EXHIBIT
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce an opening reception for a new Atrium Gallery exhibit for February 2024. “In Awe of England\, But Happy to be Home” is an exhibit of pastels by Wanda Short of Stony Fork.  The pieces in this exhibit were inspired by Wanda’s recent tour of the British countryside with a knitting group. The opening reception will be held on Saturday\, February 10th from 2-4PM. Light refreshments\, including desserts from Yorkshire Meadows\, will be served at the reception\, which is free and open to the public. \nWanda Short is originally from downstate Pennsylvania. She attended Mansfield College from 1964-1968\, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Art. She moved back to the area in the early 2000s\, first to Galeton\, and then settling in the village of Stony Fork. Wanda has tried her hand at many different media\, but has always loved pastels which bridge the divide between drawing and painting. Wanda studied pastel portraiture with Leo Gilroy in Hershey. She does still create some portraits; however\, her more recent work has focused on landscapes. \nWhen she traveled to Great Britain in May of 2023\, Wanda was awed by the beauty of the country. The Cotswalds are considered an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” in England\, a land of rolling green hills and picturesque towns built of golden stone. Wanda hopes that visitors to her exhibit will be similarly inspired to see the beauty in simple things like a fence\, a fountain\, and the neighbor’s dog. Whether you are venturing out into the world\, or simply appreciating the wonders of your neighborhood\, there is beauty to be found all around us. This exhibit will be on display in the Atrium Gallery from February 10 through March 3. \nThe Gmeiner is open from 12-6PM Tuesdays through Sundays and is located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro behind the Green Free Library. Admission to the gallery is free.

SUMMARY:Chili & Chowder with a Chance for Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries is adding a new element – and a lot more chocolate – to its annual upcoming chili tasting event. \nChili & Chowder with a Chance for Chocolate is Saturday\, Feb. 10\, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. during Wellsboro’s Winter Celebration. Several businesses in downtown Wellsboro will concoct chili and/or chowder that can be sampled with the purchase of a tasting passport for $10. At each location\, tasters can enter to win various chocolate prizes. When done tasting\, participants can vote for their top three favorite dishes using their passports\, which can then be dropped off at any of the tasting sites or passport purchase locations. \n“We’re happy to present a new twist on our chili tasting event\, which is now ‘Chili & Chowder with a Chance for Chocolate\,’” said Jim Howe\, president of Second Chance’s board and one of the organization’s founders. “We wanted to add chowders for our friends who aren’t crazy about chili\, but still want to support local animals in need and get chances to win chocolate. This event has grown every year thanks to support from the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce and its Winter Celebration\, as well as the fantastic local businesses that serve as tasting sites. We can’t wait to see what they cook up this year.” \nSigned on so far as tasting locations are Pop’s Culture Shoppe\, Main Street Creamery\, From My Shelf Books\, Kelly’s Canyon Country Crafts\, Los Agaves Taqueria\, Shabby Rue\, Wild Asaph Outfitters\, Seniors Creations\, Timeless Destination\, Oregon Hill Wineries\, Becks Bistro and Hillstone Farms. Additional sites will be announced on Second Chance’s Facebook as they are confirmed. \nTasting passports can be purchased for $10 each at the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce\, 114 Main St.\, starting on Feb. 3\, or at Penn Oak Realty\, 65 Main St.\, on Feb.10 during the event. \nAll proceeds benefit local homeless\, abandoned\, and at-risk dogs and cats helped by Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries\, a 501c3 nonprofit serving the community for 22 years. For more information about the event\, call 570-376-3646\, email secondchanceas@yahoo.com or message Second Chance on Facebook. SUMMARY:Eliot Ness Museum St. Valentines Day Soiree
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon of music\, refreshments and Roaring ‘20s fun is planned for Saturday\, Feb. 10\, in Coudersport\, from 2 pm to 4 pm\, musicians Steve Quelet and Eppie Bailey will play a set that features Americana\, original eclectic songs\, contemporary folk music and some surprise selections.\nAttendees are encouraged\, but not required\, to dress in their Roaring ‘20s attire as they enjoy charcuterie and period treats\, wine and other beverages.\nThey’ll gather in a setting that features vintage vehicles\, a Prohibition-era corn whiskey skill\, and exhibits that celebrate the life and career of famous crimefighter Eliot Ness.\nIn keeping with the theme\, attendees can look over a life-sized exhibit re-enacting the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre\, a jarring incident in gangland Chicago that built public support for Ness’s fearless battle against organized crime.\nAnother museum section explores Ness’s connection to Coudersport\, where he spent the final days of his life in 1956-57. The community played a significant role in the creation of a book\, “The Untouchables\,” that launched two television series and a blockbuster movie of the same title.\nTickets are $30 each and the supply is limited. Proceeds benefit the work of the non-profit museum. Online ordering is available at eliotnessmuseum.org. For reservations\, call or text 607-423-6902.

SUMMARY:Mt. Tom Challenge

Tom with views into the PA Grand Canyon and to the west nearly to Galeton. After catching your breath and those awesome views\, continue a short distance along the ridge before descending most of the way back on a grassy (or more snowy this time of year) forest road. Reach the tent at the bottom before 11am and YOU GET TO DO IT AGAIN!!! How many laps can you do in two hours? \nDate: Sunday\, February 11\, 2024 – Start Time: 9am.  The challenge is to complete at least one lap within two hours in whatever conditions are present. Not enough of a challenge? Then do as many as you can in that time! Register by 8:30am day of event. \nCost: FREE – no frills\, no prizes\, just a great morning out on the trails. Some type of traction device may be required based on trail conditions (screw-shoes\, yak-traks\, microspikes\, etc\, or even snowshoes!) SUMMARY:American Horn Quartet to Perform at CU-Mansfield
DESCRIPTION:The American Horn Quartet will give a concert and masterclass at Commonwealth University-Mansfield on Thursday\, Feb. 15.\n\n\nThe masterclass will be at 1 p.m. and the concert at 7:30 p.m. in Butler Music Center’s Steadman Theatre. Both are free and open to the public. The masterclass is designed for collegiate horn ensembles and high school horn soloists. The concert will include two world premiere performances.\n\n\nEntering its fourth decade\, the American Horn Quartet continues to be unique in the field of brass chamber music. Their exuberant performances have brought audiences all over the world to their feet. In 1982\, four American horn players who were working and residing in Europe met for the first time to explore the potential of the horn quartet\, a chamber music formation with a surprisingly long tradition. They quickly began to supplement the existing repertoire with their own compositions and arrangements.\n\n\nThe individual members of the AHQ – Kerry Turner\, Kristina Mascher-Turner\, Geoffrey Winter\, and Denise Tryon – are all successful soloists in their own right\, having won top international competitions in Geneva\, Prague\, New York\, Passau\, and Munich. To these accolades\, they added top honors with the quartet at chamber music competitions in Barcs\, Hungary (Philip Jones Competition)\, Brussels\, and Tokyo.\n\n\nBesides being featured at horn and brass festivals around the globe\, the American Horn Quartet has established itself at regular chamber music concert series on the international circuit. They have also appeared as soloists with numerous symphony orchestras\, among them the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic\, Sinfonia Varsovia\, Philharmonica Hungarica\, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi\, the Brabants Orchestra of Eindhoven\, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra\, and the Bordeaux Aquitaine Symphony Orchestra in France.\n\n\nOther highlights include performances at the Barbican in London\, the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles\, an appearance with orchestra at the Tonhalle in Zurich\, and recording collaborations with the horn sections of the New York Philharmonic and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
