DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, April 9\, 2024\, at 1:00 pm\, we will host Golden Afternoons in the lobby of the Deane Center. Every second Tuesday of the month\, the Deane Center hosts this hour of activity for senior citizens in our community\, free of charge. This month we present Yolie Canales with a free flower pot for each participant. We have done this before. Yolie will bring in petunia plugs from Leister’s Greenhouses and 4 1/2″ pots filled with peat growing medium for participants to plant in. One flower pot per person to take home and watch grow provided you listen to Yolie and learn how to care for it. Leister’s Greenhouses has donated this selection of petunias which they are growing this year. They will be available for sale by May. Join us as we welcome Spring with a free flower pot. Free light refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Morning Musicales Present the Music and Marvels of Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:See the sights of Egypt without leaving Wellsboro. Margery Hoffman and her sister Judith Artley of Framingham\, Mass.\, will present a program for Wednesday Morning Musicales on April 10 at 10:15 a.m. at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center about their 2023 trip to Egypt.\nThe presentation will consist of slides and recorded Nubian music. They will show the ancient sites of this exotic country and introduce some of the ancient musical instruments used to worship the gods.\nThe travelogue will start near Cairo\, at the Pyramids in Dahshur and Giza\, before flying to Luxor to uncover the Valley of the Kings and tour the temples of Luxor and Karnak and Dendera.\nIt’s at the Dendera complex that the audience will be introduced to ancient instruments and the goddess Hathor as well as the dwarf god Bes\, as documented on the temple walls. They will travel by river boat upstream on the Nile River to Aswan to partake in high tea at the Old Cataract Hotel where Agatha Christie was inspired to write “Death on the Nile.”\nNext\, is Nubian music played by instruments documented in Egypt as early as 1300 BC. The mizmar\, a double-reeded woodwind\, is very foreign to western ears. The final stop is the Philae Temple\, relocated between the low dam and the high dam. Like Dendera\, this temple also devoted to worshipping Hathor and Bes.\nThe trip continues to Abu Simbel Temple near the Sudanese boarder to hear a Nubian folk band sing about the displacement of families due to the building of the high dam and Lake Nassar.\nThe Musicales meets on the second Wednesday of each month\, September through May. The organization was formed in 1934 to promote interest in music among its members and in the community. Each meeting showcases local talent. All events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Saturday Morning Birding Series
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Morning Birding Walks at Hills Creek State Park begin on Saturdays in April and May All 8:00 A.M. – 10:00 A.M. Meet at the Hills Creek State Park Office prior to 8am and leave promptly. Usually attendees drive to a nearby starting location in the park. Members of the Tiadaghton Audubon Society will lead this series throughout April and May. Walks highlight the many varieties of water and woodland birds that live in or migrate through the parks. Bald Eagles are often observed\, as well as Ospreys that frequent Hills Creek Lake. Please bring your binoculars if you have them (limited sets available) and wear subdued clothing and sturdy shoes. Walks are usually two hours and at a slow pace and a limited distance. If the weather is inclement\, the group may opt for a driving tour with several key stops nearby to keep optics dry (as well as the participants). Check out the club’s website for updates on what’s been seen lately and other helpful local birding information.

SUMMARY:Canyon Waterfall Geology Hike:  Pre-Registration is Required
DESCRIPTION:Encore! Please note\, this is a repeat of the same hike and excellent information provided on the last hike. \nExplore the waterfalls along the lower Turkey Path on your quest to unlock the geologic secrets of the PA Grand Canyon. The one-mile round trip hike up about 400 vertical feet (half way) of the trail will be led by both park staff and professional geologists from DNCR’s Bureau of Geological Survey. The hike begins at the base of the canyon\, where the Lock Haven Formation is exposed. These rocks were deposited approximately 380 million years ago as sediment on the edge of an ancient sea and contain fossils of marine organisms. As the hike progresses\, the exposed rock will be progressively younger and transition into the shoreline and alluvial plane deposits of the Catskill Formation\, effectively transporting participants through time and space of the geologic history of the gorge. \nThis program is well-suited for those curious about the ancient past of the gorge and those willing and able to complete the moderately strenuous hike. Registrants should meet by 9am in the Darling Run parking lot for the Pine Creek Trail (rail trail)\, be bussed approximately 3.5 miles to the base of the trail below Leonard Harrison State Park where the program will begin. After a brief introduction\, the group will climb slowly\, learning along the way to a point about ½ way up the path and near the upper waterfall. Participants should wear proper footwear and layered clothing for the hike. A small backpack\, water and snacks are also encouraged. Those interested should register online\, https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/event/canyon_waterfall_geology_hike_974 or by calling 570-724-3061. Spaces are limited and the deadline to register is Tuesday April 9th. In the event of inclement weather\, this program may be cancelled.

Fireside Collective has drawn on folk\, blues\, funk and a wide variety of bluegrass sounds to create a distinctive body of work that is all their own. Mandolin player Jesse Iaquinto has strong Wellsboro roots and connections to Coudersport.

SUMMARY:Saturday Morning Birding Series
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Morning Birding Walks at Hills Creek State Park begin on Saturdays in April and May All 8:00 A.M. – 10:00 A.M. Meet at the Hills Creek State Park Office prior to 8am and leave promptly. Usually attendees drive to a nearby starting location in the park. Members of the Tiadaghton Audubon Society will lead this series throughout April and May. Walks highlight the many varieties of water and woodland birds that live in or migrate through the parks. Bald Eagles are often observed\, as well as Ospreys that frequent Hills Creek Lake. Please bring your binoculars if you have them (limited sets available) and wear subdued clothing and sturdy shoes. Walks are usually two hours and at a slow pace and a limited distance. If the weather is inclement\, the group may opt for a driving tour with several key stops nearby to keep optics dry (as well as the participants). Check out the club’s website for updates on what’s been seen lately and other helpful local birding information.

A selection of historic trades\, including the museum’s birch still\, will be demonstrated. A cooking demonstration and tasting featuring wild leeks will be in the museum’s Mess Hall from 11am-1pm both Saturday and Sunday.\nOn Saturday (April 20) only\, visitors will be able to watch the museum’s re-created 19th century steam-powered circular sawmill in operation.\nAccess to all museum exhibits and attractions is included in the price of admission to the show. Food and drink will be available on-site for purchase. No ATM on site so plan your visit accordingly. DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, April 15\, 2024\, Mill Cove\, Inc. announced that their Earth Day event planned for Saturday\, April 20\, 2024\, has been canceled due to the current very wet conditions at the Mill Cove Environmental Area.\n\n\nLast week’s rainy weather and the forecast of more rain this week will prevent the organization from being able to prepare the area for the event.\n\n\nMill Cove Inc.\, is very disappointed that they had to make this decision. It was noted by the group that the area is open\, however\, they remind people to use caution on the roadway especially at the lower end as it is extremely muddy.\n\n\nThe organization will be contacting vendors and exhibitors through email and will follow up with phone calls so that everyone receives notification of the event cancellation.\n\n\nThe dedication of the Charles E. Fox Pavilion will be rescheduled for the annual meeting this summer.
