SUMMARY:Saturday Morning Birding Series
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Morning Birding Walks at Hills Creek State Park begin on Saturdays in April and May All 8:00 A.M. – 10:00 A.M. Meet at the Hills Creek State Park Office prior to 8am and leave promptly. Usually attendees drive to a nearby starting location in the park. Members of the Tiadaghton Audubon Society will lead this series throughout April and May. Walks highlight the many varieties of water and woodland birds that live in or migrate through the parks. Bald Eagles are often observed\, as well as Ospreys that frequent Hills Creek Lake. Please bring your binoculars if you have them (limited sets available) and wear subdued clothing and sturdy shoes. Walks are usually two hours and at a slow pace and a limited distance. If the weather is inclement\, the group may opt for a driving tour with several key stops nearby to keep optics dry (as well as the participants). Check out the club’s website for updates on what’s been seen lately and other helpful local birding information.

DESCRIPTION:Unmistakably Nordic in flavor\, Sofia Talvik somehow still conforms to American interpretations of her own original music\, a North Sea siren blending sparkle and melancholy. A veteran performer with 9 full length albums as well as numerous EPs\, singles and tours behind her. \nGrowing up in Sweden her music has always had a special tint of her Scandinavian heritage\, making her a favorite among music lovers. \nPrimarily a live artist\, Talvik has taken her music across Europe and through 48 U.S. states\, riding in her 1989 Winnebago Warrior with her husband at the wheel\, digging deep into the American sound and channeling it through her Nordic roots to create a singular brand of Americana. Talvik releases all of her music on Makaki Music\, a record label she started early in her career to maintain full control over her own recordings. While her Swedish roots serve as the basis for her songwriting\, she often calls upon her many journeys and experiences for inspiration\, especially the uniquely American archetype of roaming the endless highway. \nLiving like a musical nomad\, moving from place to place\, slowly but steadily building her audience through her heartfelt and personal performances she got to experience the USA in a way few people do. The people she met opened their homes and hearts to her and some of them even made it into her songs. \nTalvik has released 9 full length albums and countless singles and eps. She has performed at festivals ranging from Lollapalooza to SXSW. She has opened for Maria McKee and David Duchovny\, and has collaborated with former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler\, as well as Tobias Fröberg (Peter Bjorn and John)\, who produced her 2008 LP Jonestown. She has also released 2 albums in Swedish as part of the New Acoustic duo Hansan with German cellist David Floer. \nTickets are $25\, and we will have table seating\, which is the standard for our BYOB shows. There are General Admissions risers in the back of the theatre and the opportunity to rent a table in the middle and front of the theatre. A small table is an additional $5 and seats 2-4 people. Possible topics include: fireflies\, owls\, bats\, black bears and more! \nRegistration is not required for Nature at Night programs. \n— \nLocation: Google Maps pin for parking here. Park programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. Bench seating is limited\, you may want to bring a chair and/or blanket. \nPets: No pets\, please. Registration closes at 3 PM\, 2 days prior to class. Class size is limited to 10 seats\, with a waitlist availabile if class has filled. \nForeground material\, such as trees or buildings may also add to the composition. SUMMARY:CONTEMPORARY BLACKSMITH AND PRIMITIVE PAINTER EXHIBIT
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is very pleased to announce a new Main Gallery exhibit for May featuring husband and wife artists Anthony and Lisa Arkus. Anthony is a contemporary blacksmith and Lisa paints in a quirky primitive style. Locals and visitors may have seen the Arkus’ work at the Laurel Festival or other regional festivals. This exhibit open with a free reception for the public on Saturday\, May 11th from 2-4PM. Light refreshments will be served. This exhibit will only be on display until Sunday\, May 26th. \nLisa and Anthony Arkus live in the mountains of Potter County\, PA with their 2 cats. Lisa was introduced to art at a very early age with an abundance of art supplies and the freedom to create\, which has been a large influence on the self-taught artist she has become.  When Lisa began selling her art full time 25 years ago\, painting was her main medium. She has since begun adding vintage and handmade papers\, along with other mediums. Each piece Lisa creatse is a story in its own right\, a testament to innocence\, the magic of childhood\, and the world of make-believe.   In her spare time Lisa tends to her amazing flower gardens\, which are a source of inspiration for her artwork. \nAnthony began as an apprentice in Vermont in the 1970s\, where he was trained in traditional blacksmithing. Anthony then began his own shop\, creating original designs. Anthony is a full-time blacksmith. creating both functional and sculptural pieces. His original designs are inspired by nature and expressed in metal by hand forging using both ancient and modern tools and techniques\, creating a harmony of design and function. He uses raw materials such as steel\, copper\, and brass\, in bar stock\, sheets\, and plates which are shaped and formed with a coal and propane forge. \nThe Gmeiner is open from 12-6PM Tuesdays through Sundays and is located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro behind the Green Free Library. Admission to the gallery is free.
