Did you know that the first US post office for Blossburg first was called “Canal Port”?\n\nPhil Hesser will talk about the first projects to transport coal down the Tioga River and how investors in the Twin Tiers backed the new technologies of canals and railroads to make it happen. Join us on November 8 at 1:00 PM at the History Center to see how Tioga coal made its way to the North Atlantic and to California gold fields thanks to the 19th century transportation “moon shot” undertaken by the tech-savvy shareholders of the Tioga Navigation Co.\n\nPhil Hesser has focused on the history of Chesapeake Bay and its watershed following a career with an international NGO and at universities in two continents. He is the author of many articles and two books: What a River Says – Exploring the Blackwater River and Refuge (2014) and with co-author Charlie Ewers A Guide to Harriet Tubman’s Eastern Shore – The Old Home Is Not There (2021).

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 9th\, there is a fun filled community event planned in Mansfield. This event\, sponsored by the American Cancer Society with Tioga Running Club\, is an opportunity to raise money and help cancer patients in Tioga County.\nTo get involved join us at Smythe Park in Mansfield on November 9th\, as we run and walk past cancer. \nChecking-in for the events begins at 8:30AM\, on November 9th\, at Smythe Park. \nThe registration day of fee for the 1 mile walk run is $15 with a maximum fee of $30 for immediate family members. The cost for the 5K run is $25.  All of the money raised at this event will go to eradicating cancer and helping patients in Tioga County. \nMany community members have donated gifts to make this event extra special. Everyone who participates in either of the walk/run events will receive a free small ice cream from Wellsboro Creamery. Top runners in the 5K event will win medals. Also remember\, all participants are encouraged to ramp up the fun by wearing costumes. The top costume participants will be awarded prizes. Growing up on a dairy farm in northern New York and then traveling around the world in a bluegrass band has given them a unique vantage point on life. They can pick. They can write a dang good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released many albums on almost every premier Americana label including Sugar Hill and Rounder. And as if that’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends like Del McCoury. Their talent level is well established\, the only producers they have ever worked with are Ricky Skaggs\, Dan Auerbach\, David Ferguson and Jerry Douglas. It’s a resume almost anybody in country music would be proud to have.  Come and enjoy some mighty fine Bluegrass! The brothers will be accompanied by their band. This is the third concert of the WCCA 6-Concert Season.
