DESCRIPTION:Wish you knew your way around the night sky? Experience the wonder of a starry night at Cherry Springs State Park through a laser-guided tour conducted by park staff. \nLearn how to find the Big Dipper and the North Star\, and learn a few key summer constellations. Great for beginners! Listen as we recount the legends and myths surrounding these mysterious patterns in the sky. Learn about park history\, current use\, and the importance of dark night skies. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required. Should we need to cancel or modify a program due to weather\, etc.\, we will email all registered participants. Optional registration will open 45 days before the program. \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nPark programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. SUMMARY:PA TRAIL CHALLENGE 2023 – HAMMERSLEY WILD AREA
DESCRIPTION:We’re headed to the Hammersley Wild Area for the 5th Annual PA Wilds Trail Challenge! \nThe PA Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers has a 30-mile (2500 ft total elevation gain)\, 2-night backpacking trip planned for the weekend of 6/23 to 25. The Susquehannock Trail System\, STS\, is an 85-mile loop linking old Civilian Conservation Corps fire trails\, abandoned railroad grades\, and logging roads through the remote and unspoiled woodlands of Pennsylvania’s Susquehannock State Forest. \nSpecific meeting place and other details will be sent to registered\, paid participants prior to the event. We’ll hit the trail at 4 p.m..\, Friday 6/23 and spend the weekend hiking clockwise on the Susquehannok Trail System\, STS\, from the Cross Fork Trailhead \nParticipants need to bring all necessary gear and food for the weekend.  Participants should be of sound physical condition and have experience backpacking. Per DCNR regulations we will split into groups with a max of 9 hikers. Experienced youths (14 years old minimum) can join with responsible adult. DESCRIPTION:Calling all Musicians! The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a series of free Open Mic Nights for Musicians. These will be held on the third Wednesday of each month starting on March 15th\, from 7-9PM. Musicians of all ages are invited to participate\, and all acoustic styles are welcome. The open mic concept is very welcoming and relaxed. Each musician or group will have up to 15 minutes to share their music with the audience. We hope to have everyone from beginners to seasoned performers participate.\nMusicians should arrive by 6:30 in order to sign up for a performance time. These will be arranged on a first-come\, first-serve basis. If a musician isn’t comfortable with a full 15 minutes\, we will accommodate that as well. Performers should bring their own instruments\, unless they plan to play the Gmeiner’s piano. There will also be a basic sound system available. If all of the 15-minute slots do not fill up\, we may end the evening with a jam session. This is a great opportunity to have fun and meet other local musicians.\nIf you are a music lover\, please come out to enjoy the performances and cheer on the brave souls who step up to the mic. DESCRIPTION:Does your wardrobe need a lift? Join PA Wilds teaching artist Julie Mader for a beginner-friendly Silk Scarf Painting Workshop. During this “have no fear” workshop\, participants will use dyes formulated for silk fibers to turn an 8”x54″ silk scarf “blank” into a wearable piece of art that is certain to turn heads. \nJulie will bring a full spectrum of color choices and will offer instruction on technique and color theory basics to get you started with confidence. Participants are encouraged to have a color palette in mind\, so they can “jump right in” after the demonstration. This workshop is enjoyable for ANYONE who loves yummy colors. \nThis workshop is scheduled for Tuesday\, June 20\, 2023\, from 6:00 – 8;00 p.m. at the Education Council’s Coudersport office at 5 Water Street. Donna the Buffalo is one of the founding and host bands of the annual Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance\, and of the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival; and is among the headliners at The Great Blue Heron Music Festival in Sherman\, New York. The band has performed and recorded with a variety of musicians\, including such prominent folk/roots performers as Jim Lauderdale\, the father and son zydeco musicians Preston and Keith Frank\, Bela Fleck of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones\, the Malian musician Mamadou Diabate\, Claire Lynch\, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos\, The Duhks and Amy Helm. The band describes their genre as a mix of folk rock\, reggae\, and roots music. You won’t want to miss a rare opportunity to see this Festival Band in an intimate close-up theatre. SUMMARY:LAUREL FESTIVAL 10K
DESCRIPTION:The Laurel Festival 10K (6.21 miles) will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday\, June 17 at Packer Park on Queen Street in Wellsboro. The two-mile Fun Run/Walk will start at 9:05 a.m.\n\n\nThose who pre-register for the 10K on or before Thursday\, June 1 and pay the $25 entry fee will receive a free event T-shirt\, courtesy of First Citizens Community Bank. They will also be entered in the early bird drawing for a chance to win $25 in Wellsboro Chamber Dollars to spend in more than 40 area businesses. Those who do not pre-register will have the option to purchase a race T-shirt the day of the event.\n\n\nAge categories in the 10K for males and females are: 19 and under\, 20-29\, 30-39\, 40-49\, 50-59\, 60-69 and 70 and over. The course is challenging with both paved and dirt surfaces and rolling hills that provide views of Pennsylvania Grand Canyon country scenery.\n\n\nUPMC Wellsboro is sponsoring the 10K and Fun Run/Walk awards. For the 10K race\, large\, medium and small medals with ribbons imprinted with “2023 Laurel Festival 10K Footrace” will be awarded. Large medals will be presented to the first place overall male and female finishers; medium medals to the second and third place overall male and female finishers; and small medals to the oldest and to the youngest to cross the finish line first. The first\, second and third place finishers in each 10K age category will also receive medals.\n\n\nEach Fun Run participant will receive a commemorative ribbon; the first\, second and third place runners and overall youngest runner to cross the finish line in the Fun Run will each receive a small medal with a ribbon imprinted with “Laurel Festival Fun Run.”\n\n\nThe entry fee for the 10K is $25 and for the two-mile Fun Run/Walk is $5. Packet pick-up and registration for both the 10K and Fun Run will be from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on race day in Packer Park. Those who register that day must pay the entry fee in cash or by check. Prior to race day\, registrants can pay the entry fee with Visa or MasterCard.\n\n\nInsta-Results will provide timing for the race and the Tioga County Amateur Radio Club will handle communications.\n\n\nC&N and Weis Markets are providing free post-race refreshments to all runners.\n\n\nTo register online or to print out a form to register for the 10K and Fun Run\, go to the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce website at www.wellsboropa.com. At the top of the page is the Laurel Festival 10K Foot Race banner with an orange Sign Up button. DESCRIPTION:Premiering on June 2 at 7:30 PM in the Coolidge Theatre is Gale Largey’s brand new film about Wellsboro’s first movie star! “Kitty” Grit & Mirrors is the inspiring story of Kathryn Crawford. Born in Wellsboro to a glassmaker\, she dealt with many setbacks during her life. Only through sheer grit and a belief in the American Dream was she able to become a Hollywood movie star. During the 20s and 30s\, she as in 18 films with many notable film stars like: Marie Dressler\, Bing Crosby\, Jimmy Durante\, The Three Stooges\, Robert Young\, Hoot Gibson and Buddy Rodgers. After her movie career\, she became a nationally recognized interior decorator. Her work was featured three times in President Herbert Hoover\, General Douglas MacArthur at the Waldorf Astoria\, along with the homes of Barron Hilton and Mary Pickford. There will be 3 showings: Friday\, June 2 & Friday June 9 at 7:30 PM and on Thursday\, June 15 at 8 PM. Admission is donations to the Deane Center.

SUMMARY:EXPLORE BARBOUR ROCK TRAIL
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 15\, everyone is invited to go on an excursion from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. along Barbour Rock Trail to learn about botany and especially wildflowers of the Tioga State Forest\, and to see the Barbour Rock vista that overlooks the Pine Creek Gorge. This outing is free and open to the public.\n\n\nMeet at the Barbour Rock Trail parking area at 4 p.m.\n\n\nTo get there\, take U.S. Route 6 from either Galeton or Wellsboro. At the Burnin Barrel/Ansonia Valley Inn at 5440 Route 6\, turn off onto Colton Road and drive to the Barbour Rock Trail parking area\, which is not far from Colton Point State Park.\n\n\nThe Barbour Rock Trail is a wide\, flat\, packed gravel path accessible for people walking or using a wheelchair. It is located on the western rim of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon in the Tioga State Forest and offers one\, if not the best and most easily accessible spots from which to view the canyon.\n\n\nParticipants will make their way from the parking area down Barbour Rock Trail to the vista and return to the parking area by 6 p.m. The total distance is 1.3 miles to the vista and back.\n\n\nDCNR and Hometown Science\, a local organization\, are sponsoring this adventure.\n\n\nLeading the program are Chris Firestone\, a botanist with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry office in Wellsboro\, and Susan Schenck\, environmental education specialist with DCNR’s Hills Creek State Park Complex\, which includes nine state parks in Tioga and Potter counties.\n\n\nFirestone has been studying plants in wild and natural areas for many years.\n\n\nOnce on the trail\, participants will learn about local wildflowers\, trees and plants of the Tioga State Forest\, including Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia)\, the Commonwealth’s state flower.\n\n\n“We are striving to make this an inclusive event accessible to all\, including individuals with impaired or limited mobility\,” said Schenck. Those who would like more information\, can contact her at Lyman Run State Park at sschenck@pa.gov or by calling 814-435-3580 any time prior to the June 15 event. Individuals needing an ASL interpreter are asked to contact her by this Thursday\, June 8.
