From highlands to volcanic plains\, the moon has a diverse landscape. Join park staff in viewing these natural features and discovering where lunar landings took place among them. After viewing the moon we will take a look at a visible planet! \nTelescope availability is subject to time and crowd-size limitations. \n—– \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nPrograms are conducted at the Night Sky Viewing Area. Follow the walkway from the public program parking to the seating area. \nThe park asks that visitors to the Night Sky programs please leave their pets at home. Dim lighting\, large crowds and sensitive equipment do not create a pet-friendly environment. \nIf the sky is unfavorable for stargazing\, an alternative program may be held. \nAll programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder. \nVisitors may want to check the Clear Sky Chart for 48-hour forecasts of cloud cover and viewing conditions.

DESCRIPTION:Wish you knew your way around the night sky? Experience the wonder of a starry night at Cherry Springs State Park through a laser-guided tour conducted by park staff. \nLearn how to find the Big Dipper and the North Star\, and learn a few key summer constellations. Great for beginners! Listen as we recount the legends and myths surrounding these mysterious patterns in the sky. Learn about park history\, current use\, and the importance of dark night skies. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required. Should we need to cancel or modify a program due to weather\, etc.\, we will email all registered participants. Optional registration will open 45 days before the program. \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nPark programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. The show\, originally scheduled for The Outdoor Stage\, will be moved inside to the Coolidge Theater if the weather is too hot\, which it may be\, or rainy… Scott will be playing drums\, guitar\, and harmonica\, and of course\, singing. Selections will include rock and country music classics\, along with his own original songs.\nScott was born and raised in Wellsboro and has been providing music to the community for decades. “I really love playing at the Deane Center\, and love having this great facility in our town. It’s an honor to be taking part. I’m looking forward to seeing all my hometown folks out enjoying the summer and the music.”

DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a workshop and reading from esteemed local author Judith Sornberger. This event is a celebration of the publication of Judith’s tenth collection of poetry\, The Book of Muses\, which is hot off the presses. In this newest book\, the poet invites readers to open the door (or window\, or our hearts) to welcome the Muse in her many guises. Both events will be held on Tuesday\, July 25th. The writing workshop will start at 6PM and will be held in the Main Gallery at the Gmeiner. There is a fee of $10 for the workshop\, and pre-registration is required. The book reading and party will follow at 7PM in the Main Gallery. The reading is free and no registration is required. \nCome have fun\, find inspiration\, and discover your muse at the workshop “Finding Your Muse in Art: A Fun Writing Workshop with author Judith Sornberger!” In conjunction with Jonathan Bond’s “Rustic Beauty” exhibit\, and guided by the poet\, participants will imagine their ways into the scenes of these gorgeous paintings and discover ways to write their own poems\, inspired by the muses they find in the images in the gallery. Judith is an accomplished teacher who first taught creative writing and literature in Nebraska prisons and since then has taught in many venues\, including at Mansfield University. DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a series of free watercolor classes for adults in the Studio at the Gmeiner. All classes will be led by Kathy Pilling-Whitney of Tioga\, who has many years of teaching experience and is an accomplished watercolor painter. There will be two beginner sessions in June\, and then a series of three classes in July for those who want to learn more advanced techniques. The classes are free\, but students must provide their own materials. For these classes\, students will need to purchase a set of watercolor paints (tubes or pans – not opaque)\, at least six sheets of 140 pound watercolor paper (8×10”\, 9×12” or 11×14”)\, a watercolor palette to mix colors\, and a set of watercolor (NOT acrylic) brushes. \nThe beginner class will be offered on two dates – Sunday\, June 4th and Sunday\, June 25th from 10AM – 12PM. Students should sign up for one session or the other by emailing director@gmeinerartculturalcenter.org or calling 570-724-1917. This class is intended for students who have little to no experience with watercolor painting and is limited to 12 students per session. The beginner class will be an exploration of the properties of transparent watercolor so that students can become familiar with the medium and increase their confidence in using it. The two-hour class will include discussion of the following: masking white vs. leaving white vs. using tape\, transparent vs. opaque watercolor\, and the use of watercolor markers and watercolor pencils.  Students will also explore fluid (wet-in-wet)\, wet-on-dry\, and drybrush techniques. Demonstrations and coaching will be done for both still life and abstract designs. Students should leave the class with at least one painting\, increased skills and confidence in using watercolors\, and perhaps a desire to continue developing their skills in the advanced series of classes. \nThe advanced classes will be held on July 9th\, 16th\, and 23rd from 10AM – 12PM. Students should sign up for all three sessions by emailing director@gmeinerartculturalcenter.org or calling 570-724-1917. This series of classes is intended to greatly develop the students’ ability to use watercolors\, and is open to students who took the beginner class or who have previous experience with watercolors.  It is limited to 12 participants. The first class will start with a review of basic techniques\, and then participants will practice various watercolor techniques over the course of the three days using a variety of subject matter. Students will paint a mostly white still life creating depth and shadows without using black. They will paint a floral design and learn about color glazing with watercolors\, and they will complete an abstract design. \nThe Gmeiner is located at 134 Main Street\, Wellsboro\, behind the Green Free Library. Main St.\, Mansfield\, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. at the pavilion. \nAll drivers and passengers must register by signing a standard waiver. \nKickstands are up by 11 a.m. The drivers’ donation is $20; passengers are $10. \n\nAll proceeds benefit Wellsboro Shared Home and its residents. \nThe beautiful Victorian-style Shared Home was converted to a personal care home in 1979. The walls encompass loving care\, warmth\, kindness\, camaraderie and dignity in a safe and secure setting. SUMMARY:Private Dark Sky Telescope Tour: Shamans and Saints
DESCRIPTION:The Perseids are coming! While the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower is mid-August\, meteors can be observed any time from late July through the month of August.  As the Earth intersects with the orbit of dust particles left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle in 1992\, visitors will flock to Cherry Springs State Park for a view of the spectacular results.  Watch the meteors streak across the sky as you listen to myths and stories surrounding historical beliefs about shooting stars and constellations. \n\nJoin us at Cherry Spring State Park to take in the splendor of a gold-rated International Dark Skies Park. Those interested in experiencing a more personalized\, small-group telescope tour of the night sky can join North Star Outdoor Guides for a private telescope tour of the night sky.  Participants in this program will be guaranteed ample telescope time without long waits; includes a discussion of the importance of dark skies\, a laser-guided tour of various constellations\, and telescope viewing.  Objects which may be viewed include planets\, nebulae\, red giants\, globular clusters\, galaxies\, and binary star systems. \nGroup Size: max. capacity 16\, not including children age 5 and under \nBring: Chairs\, bug spray\, and a small red flashlight. (ONLY RED LIGHTS ARE ALLOWED ON THE VIEWING FIELD.) \nDress: Dress warmly for cooler than anticipated night temperatures.  The field is at a higher elevation and exposed. \nRegistration Required – Registration will open 45 days before the program when possible and close at 3pm 2 days before the program (or when full).
