DESCRIPTION:Experience the wonder of the night sky at Cherry Springs State Park through a laser-guided tour conducted by park staff. If conditions allow\, we’ll take a look through telescopes at some of the key features of the spring sky. \nHear legends and myths surrounding several familiar and not so familiar constellations. Learn about park history\, current use\, and the importance of dark night skies. \nTelescope availability is subject to staff/volunteer availability\, weather conditions\, and crowd size limitations. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required. Should we need to cancel or modify a program due to weather\, etc.\, we will email all registered participants. DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce that our current Atrium Gallery artist\, Lee O’Connell\, will be presenting a class on “The Basics of Watercolor.” The class will be held on Saturday\, July 6th.  from 10AM – 12PM in the Studio at the Gmeiner. The cost is $20 per student and materials will be provided. Students do NOT need any previous drawing or painting experience. They will learn to paint a sunflower and receive instructions to take home with them to continue learning. \nLee O’Connell is primarily a watercolor artist who dabbles in oils. Lee belongs to many art societies including Women in Watercolor\, the American Watercolor Society\, the Central New York Watercolor Society as well as several local art societies including the Elmira Regional Art Society\, 171 Cedar Arts Center\, the Arts Council of the Southern Tier\, Community Arts of Elmira and many more. She has won several awards for her work including honorable mention in the Palette Show at the Arnot Art Museum and Jurors Choice Award at the Central New York Watercolor Society show. \nClass is limited to 15 students and pre-registration is required. You and your Dreamcoat\, ahead of your time!” One of the most enduring shows of all time\, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph\, his father Jacob\, eleven brothers and the coat of many colors. DESCRIPTION:Back in a time before television\, internet\, video games\, and graphic novels\, there was the splendor and drama of the night sky.  Gods followed their whims\, mortals struggled to please\, monsters were slain\, and heroes were born.  Explore the constellations and learn the Greek Mythology associated with them. \n\nJoin us at Cherry Spring State Park to take in the splendor of a gold-rated International Dark Skies Park. Those interested in experiencing a more personalized\, small-group telescope tour of the night sky can join North Star Outdoor Guides for a private telescope tour of the night sky.  Participants in this program will be guaranteed ample telescope time without long waits; includes a discussion of the importance of dark skies\, a laser-guided tour of various constellations\, and telescope viewing.  Objects which may be viewed include planets\, nebulae\, red giants\, globular clusters\, galaxies\, and binary star systems. \nGroup Size: max. capacity 16\, not including children age 5 and under \nBring: Chairs\, bug spray\, and a small red flashlight. (ONLY RED LIGHTS ARE ALLOWED ON THE VIEWING FIELD.) \nDress: Dress warmly for cooler than anticipated night temperatures.  The field is at higher elevation and exposed. \nRegistration Required – Registration will open 45 days prior to the program when possible and close at 3pm 2 days prior to the program (or when full). DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is thrilled to announce that Stacy Kelley will be returning for this summer’s artist-in-residency\, but will be offering classes for adults this time. “Learning to See Like an Artist: Building Your Visual Language Toolbox” is for adults who would like to improve their drawing skills. Accurate drawing skills are a core essential to communicating visually. For this 5-day residency students will focus on observing from life and learn how to transfer what they see in 3 dimensions to a 2-dimensional surface. They will be exposed to techniques employed by old master artists to create successful representational drawings. \nClasses will be held on 5 consecutive Wednesdays\, starting June 26 through July 24 (July 31 rain date) and will run from 11AM-4PM with a lunch break from 1- 2PM. All materials will be provided. \nRegistration is free and limited to 10 students. Students must be able to attend all five days\, since the lessons build on each other. Interested students should pre-register with the director of the Gmeiner by either calling 570-724-1917 or emailing director@gmeinerartculturalcenter.org.
