SUMMARY:Young Engineers 3-D Exhibit at Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center
DESCRIPTION:YOUNG “JUNIOR ENGINEERS” BRING 3D CREATIVITY TO THE GMEINER FOR ULTIMATE SUMMER KICKOFF EXHIBIT \nThe Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is proud to be kicking off summer with a burst of youthful energy\, proudly presenting the “ART-gineered” student exhibition. Running from Saturday\, June 13 through Sunday\, July 5\, 2026\, in the Atrium Gallery\, this lively show features the brilliant imaginations of 100 second-grade students from Don Gill Elementary School. \nThe community\, families\, and art-lovers of all ages are invited to celebrate these young creators at a fun opening reception on Saturday\, June 13\, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Attendees can enjoy light refreshments while viewing the artwork\, and admission is completely free. \nThe “ART-gineered” project flips the script on traditional art shows by connecting the students’ second-grade STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Art\, and Math) skills with exciting future career paths. For this creative challenge\, student “Junior Engineer” teams worked together to build original 3D sculptures using everyday recycled materials. Every single sculpture was directly inspired by a classic 2D painting by the gallery’s original benefactor\, Arthur Gmeiner. Throughout the month of June\, visitors can see these historic paintings hanging side-by-side with the students’ matching 3D masterpieces. \nYoung visitors attending the exhibit can participate in an interactive scavenger hunt inviting them to explore both Gmeiner’s gallery exhibits. Children who complete the hunt will win a special take-home art pack\, generously provided by the Art Friends of the Gmeiner. \nThe public can view this spectacular collection of regional photography during regular gallery hours\, which are 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM\, Tuesdays through Sundays. The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is closed on Mondays. Admission to the gallery and the opening reception is always free to the public. \nLocated at 134 Main Street in beautiful downtown Wellsboro (directly behind the Green Free Library)\, the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is a large\, free public art gallery. The Gmeiner is deeply committed to providing a professional platform to showcase both emerging and established regional artists.

DESCRIPTION:“LOOK CLOSER: BEYOND THE 1st IMPRESSION” MAIN GALLERY REGIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT AT THE GMEINER \nThe Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is proud to present its highly anticipated 2026 Regional Photography Exhibit in the Main Gallery. Running from Saturday\, June 13 through Sunday\, July 5\, 2026\, this competitive exhibition showcases the diverse talents of photographers living within a 150-mile radius of Wellsboro. \nThe public is invited to celebrate the artists at an opening reception on Saturday\, June 13\, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is closed on Mondays.
Raised in Ontario\, she aspired to study modern architecture under Frank Lloyd Wright. After graduating\, she attended business school during the Depression era. She created a line of children’s clothing designs called Precious Few. Financial challenges led the family to relocate to Blossburg\, Pennsylvania\, where Elizabeth worked at Mansfield University library until her retirement in 1982. She then developed a passion for quilting\, creating intricate hand-stitched quilts with traditional and original designs. \nHer quilts\, previously shared only with friends and family\, are now being publicly presented for the first time at the Gmeiner Gallery by her son Dr. Adam Mahonske. Elizabeth passed away in July 2015 at the age of 101. \nThe Gmeiner is open from 12-6PM Tuesdays through Sundays and is located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro behind the Green Free Library. Established with the vision of connecting people\, especially youth\, with the natural world\, This Is My Quest has become a beacon of environmental stewardship and outdoor learning. SUMMARY:TANNERIES OF TIOGA COUNTY PRESENTATION AT THE GMEINER
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a presentation on the history of tanneries in Tioga County by local historian Betsy Hale.  Tanneries were places where leather was made from animal hides. This presentation will be held twice to allow people with differing schedules to attend. The first presentation will be on Thursday\, October 19th at 2PM and the second will be on Tuesday\, October 24th at 6PM. Admission is free and open to the public. \nTanneries existed in Tioga County since the early 1800s\, soon after the county was formed\, until the last one closed in 2004 — almost 200 years of their existence here in the county.  At one time there were nineteen different ones in operation.  Many were very small but others claimed to be the biggest in the world.  This presentation will give an accounting of their existence.  Many of the records are long lost but\, through research\, this presentation will give a history about the leather industry in the county and the demise of its existence. \nBetsy Hale is the President of the Westfield Historical Society.  Last year she gave a talk at the B&S Railroad gathering in Addison\, New York about the tanneries along the B&S and WAG railroads.  For this October presentation\, she will be focusing only on the tanneries located in Tioga County\, Pennsylvania.  The Westfield Historical Society has a vast collection of items from the former Eberle Tannery/Westfield Tannery\, some of which Betsy presented at the program in conjunction with Develop Tioga at the demolition of the Westfield tannery buildings in 2019. \nBetsy\, a native of West Virginia\, has lived in PA for over thirty years and has a love of history\, serving as President of the Westfield Historical Society for the last six years.  She lives in Westfield with her husband\, Michael Hale.  Besides local history\, her interests include genealogy\, reading\, crocheting\, quilting and spending time with her grandchildren. \nFor further information about the presentation or the Gmeiner\, contact Carrie at 570-724-1917 or director@gmeinerartculturalcenter.org.
