Class size is limited to 10 seats\, with a waitlist availabile if class has filled. \nForeground material\, such as trees or buildings may also add to the composition. Samples of Curt’s work online: http://pbase.com/cwphoto \n— \nEssential Gear: \n\nDSLR Camera\nfully charged battery\nsturdy tripod\nwide angle lens preferred (Rokinon 14mm is popular & has reasonable cost)\nStrongly recommend a spare battery and a memory card.\nOptional: laptop with image editing software.\n\nParticipants should be familiar with changing camera settings and have either a dim red flashlight or a red screen app on their phone. SUMMARY:Partial Solar Eclipse Viewing
DESCRIPTION:If you want to enjoy the eclipse\, but don’t want to drive into the path of totality\, stop by the park instead to view the partial eclipse! We’re celebrating\, observing\, and admiring the eclipse from 2 PM – 4:30 PM on Monday\, April 8. The peak of the eclipse will occur around 3:20 PM. In this free\, family-friendly event we’ll be doing all kinds of activities. If crowd-sizes permit\, we’ll look through our specially filtered solar telescopes directly at stages of the eclipse itself. We’ll even have eclipse glasses available while supplies last. Possible activities include making a solar projector\, sun prints\, and contributing to solar science by observing the sun. Activities will be available at set times throughout the event\, options will be modified to suit crowd size. Stop by for a few minutes\, or stay the whole time. This event will be held at the Night Sky Public viewing area on the north side of Route 44. No pets\, please. Large crowds and sensitive equipment do not create a pet-friendly environment. The moon will begin to cross the sun at around 2 PM\, reaching a maximum coverage at around 3:20 PM. The sun will fully reemerge around 4:30 PM. The eclipse will not be visible if it is cloudy. Sunglasses alone aren’t enough to protect your eyes\, make sure you wear certified safe eclipse glasses if you look directly at the eclipse. DESCRIPTION:As you tour the PA Wilds looking at beautiful fall leaves\, stop by Cherry Springs and see the Earth’s shadow covering part of the sun! \nStop by the Night Sky Public Viewing Area benches between 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM to safely observe a partial solar eclipse. \nWe’ll be there with a solar telescope\, loaner solar glasses\, and an explanation of exactly is going on up there in the sky. \nNo registration needed. Drop by for a moment\, or stay the whole time.  If you plan to stick around for a while\, we recommend a chair or blanket to sit on. \nProgram will be cancelled in the event of clouds\, rain\, or other inclement weather.

SUMMARY:Private Dark Sky Telescope Tour: Shamans and Saints
DESCRIPTION:The Perseids are coming! While the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower is mid-August\, meteors can be observed any time from late July through the month of August.  As the Earth intersects with the orbit of dust particles left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle in 1992\, visitors will flock to Cherry Springs State Park for a view of the spectacular results.  Watch the meteors streak across the sky as you listen to myths and stories surrounding historical beliefs about shooting stars and constellations. \n\nJoin us at Cherry Spring State Park to take in the splendor of a gold-rated International Dark Skies Park. Those interested in experiencing a more personalized\, small-group telescope tour of the night sky can join North Star Outdoor Guides for a private telescope tour of the night sky.  Participants in this program will be guaranteed ample telescope time without long waits; includes a discussion of the importance of dark skies\, a laser-guided tour of various constellations\, and telescope viewing.  Objects which may be viewed include planets\, nebulae\, red giants\, globular clusters\, galaxies\, and binary star systems. \nGroup Size: max. capacity 16\, not including children age 5 and under \nBring: Chairs\, bug spray\, and a small red flashlight. (ONLY RED LIGHTS ARE ALLOWED ON THE VIEWING FIELD.) \nDress: Dress warmly for cooler than anticipated night temperatures.  The field is at a higher elevation and exposed. \nRegistration Required – Registration will open 45 days before the program when possible and close at 3pm 2 days before the program (or when full). You may put your name on a waitlist if the program is full. \nFee: $25/person (includes a $3 non-refundable processing fee); Children (age 5 and under) Free \n*** Payment is required within 24 hrs of your registration\, or your registration will be removed.  Payment can be made by following the link provided in the email you will receive after registering *** \n  \nThe program will be cancelled in the event of rain or overcast skies. \nWeather Policy: If weather or predicted overcast skies result in us having to cancel the program you will receive a refund minus the $3.00 non-refundable processing fee. DESCRIPTION:Coming to a Night Sky Program\, but arriving early? Join park staff for a family friendly Nature at Night Program! \nThese programs feature fascinating creatures that enjoy the night as much as we do at Cherry Springs. Possible topics include: fireflies\, owls bats\, black bears and more! \nIf you arrive early you can bring a picnic! Picnic tables and charcoal grills are on site next to the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. \nRegistration is NOT required for the Nature at Night programs. \n— \nIf you have questions or would like to know when a specific topic or animal will be featured during a Nature at Night program\, email cherryspringsee@pa.gov  or call the park office at 814-435-1037. \nPark programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. Since seating is limited\, you may want to bring a chair and/or blanket. \nWe ask that park visitors please leave their pets at home. Dim lighting\, large crowds and sensitive equipment do not create a pet-friendly environment. \nAll programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder.

DESCRIPTION:Whoooo’s there? \nAfter a half-hour presentation exploring owl traits and identification\, we will hit the trail to listen (and look) for owls! They can be a little shy\, so be prepared to silently stand still at times. \nWear suitable footwear for potentially damp grass\, bring a red-light flashlight if you have one. Walk will be about 1 mile over mostly level grass and gravel surfaces. \n—- \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nPark programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. DESCRIPTION:Coming to a Night Sky Program\, but arriving early?  Join park staff on a short\, guided walk of park facilities\, learning about their past\, present and future. All ages welcome. \nExpect to walk less than a mile and mostly on level terrain. Meet at the kiosk near the restroom. Meet at the kiosk by the Night Sky Public Viewing Area.  The kiosk is next to the restrooms near the gravel lot. \nRegistration is NOT required for the Park Welcome & Walking Tours. \n—- \nIf you arrive early you can bring a picnic! Picnic tables and charcoal grills are on site next to the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. \nWe ask that all park visitors to the programs please leave their pets at home.  \nAll programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder.

Telescopes available on a first-come\, first-serve basis for the time listed. Availability is subject to staff/volunteer availability\, weather conditions\, and crowd size limitations. \n—- \nPark programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. DESCRIPTION:Wish you knew your way around the night sky? Experience the wonder of a starry night at Cherry Springs State Park through a laser-guided tour conducted by park staff. This weekend’s program will focus on the constellation of Cygnus the Swan\, Saturn\, and other late summer favorites. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required. Should we need to cancel or modify a program due to weather\, etc.\, we will email all registered participants. Optional registration will open 45 days before the program. \n— \nWhile you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program\, all visitors should arrive before dark. \nPark programs occur on the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area.
