SUMMARY:History Comes Alive - Abigail Adams - Deane Center
DESCRIPTION:Head to the Deane Center for the Performing Arts in Wellsboro on Tuesday\, April 14th at 7:30 pm for a History Comes Alive presentation\, “Abigail Admas” featuring Kim Hanley.\n\n\n\nIn her many letters Abigail Adams expressed the concerns and accomplishments of an early American patriotic woman. Her most famous request was for Congress to “Remember the ladies” in the creation of the Constitution of the United States. It was her clear understanding that women’s influences in the domestic sphere were as integral to the development of a new nation as the more public efforts of the founding fathers. Family economics\, children’s education and civic responsibility\, are the primary concerns of Abigail Adams. Her requests for legislation to benefit future generations included the necessity of education for all children regardless of sex or color\, as well as the right to self-determination for all individuals including the emancipation of slaves and granting wives equal status under the law. An understanding of her hopes for posterity begs the question: If the founding fathers would have heeded Mrs. Adams advice sooner\, would the nation have been spared years of strife from civil war to civil rights? A conversation with “Dear Abigail”\, 18th century wife and mother provides insight into the concerns of today’s Americans. \n\n\n\nMs. Hanley’s interactive school programs involve audience members who begin with large piles of money that grow smaller with each tax act that the British Parliament passes\, illustrating the economic tyranny the colonials faced under British rule. DESCRIPTION:Head to the Deane Center for the Performing Arts in Wellsboro on Tuesday\, March 24th at 7:30 pm for a History Comes Alive presentation\, “Harriet Tubman” featuring Dr. Daisy Century.\n\n\nBorn Araminta Ross\, Harriet Tubman lived as a slave on a Maryland plantation. Frequently threatened\, beaten\, whipped\, and starved\, Ms. Tubman’s indomitable spirit could not be broken. A Union spy during the Civil War as well as a nurse\, Ms. Tubman directed her consider energies towards humanitarian causes that included women’s suffrage after the war.\n\nDr. Daisy Century considers Harriet Tubman her role model\, someone who encouraged her to put others first and to lead by example. Like her inspiration\, Daisy grew up on a farm\, has a wonderful singing voice and is a determined woman of conviction: once they start a project\, they must see it through to completion. Harriet Tubman reveals a woman who made up her mind as a young girl that things could be better than they were\, “I had reasoned this out in my mind. There was one of two things I had a right to – liberty or death. DESCRIPTION:Wellsboro Community Concert Association is thrilled to present Driftwood\, an Energizing Americana Folk Rock performance on Saturday\, November 8rh\, at 7:30 pm at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts. \nThe five-member band from Binghamton\, New York\, has been performing Americana folk rock with a nod to 1960s R&B\, 1970s country rock\, contemporary pop\, folk and traditional Appalachian music since 2009. They’re known for electrifying live performances\, with melodies\, harmonies\, and lyrics bringing unique\, raw sounds to the Americana/roots music scene. Driftwood has released six albums to date. Driftwood’ is composed of founding members Joe Kollar (Banjo & Guitar) and Dan Forsyth (Guitar) along with Claire Byrne (Violin)\, Joey Arcuri (Upright Bass) and Sam Fishman (Drums). Kollar\, Forsyth and Byrne write original songs for the group and share the role of lead vocalist. Arcuri also sings. “We find our biggest inspiration amongst each other\,” notes Claire Byrne. “We are constantly inspiring each other to do better.” The Driftwood concert on November 8th is for the public who purchase individual tickets. His songs have been recorded and performed by The Kingston Trio\, The Furey Brothers\, Bob Shane and many others. He is best known\, though\, for his indelible songs—classics like ‘Donegal’\, ‘Dublin Town’ ‘I Miss the Rain’ and the eternal ‘All of The Hard Days Are Gone’. Kevin and his bands have performed for audiences at the top Celtic\, Folk and Bluegrass festivals as well as Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, Troy Music Hall\, Caffé Lena\, Berklee Performance Hall\, Proctors Theater\, The Sellersville Theater\, Saratoga Performing Arts Center. DESCRIPTION:Once again celebrating strength in diversity\, Tioga County Pride will proudly host the 4th Annual Tioga County Pride Day at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts in Wellsboro\, on Saturday June 28th starting at 10:00 AM and continuing throughout the day. \nOffering a full day of fun\, informative\, and community-minded events\, the day’s schedule also features entertainment and celebratory spirit. You can find the day’s schedule on the event website at https://lgbtqiatcpa.wixsite.com/website. \nThe night before the festival on Friday\, June 27\, 2025\, at 6:30 PM\, a free workshop with Brent Satterly\, PhD\, LCSW and professor at Widener University is an opportunity to learn about the heritage of the pride events like this annual celebration. This workshop is entitled Pride Beyond Parades: Supporting Rural LGBTQIA+ Families with Queer Joy. This workshop is free of charge\, registration on the website. \nTioga County Pride is brought to you by Tioga County Indivisible.
