SUMMARY:History Comes Alive - Abigail Adams - Deane Center
DESCRIPTION:Head to the Deane Center for the Performing Arts in Wellsboro on Tuesday\, April 14th at 7:30 pm for a History Comes Alive presentation\, “Abigail Admas” featuring Kim Hanley.\n\n\n\nIn her many letters Abigail Adams expressed the concerns and accomplishments of an early American patriotic woman. Her most famous request was for Congress to “Remember the ladies” in the creation of the Constitution of the United States. It was her clear understanding that women’s influences in the domestic sphere were as integral to the development of a new nation as the more public efforts of the founding fathers. Family economics\, children’s education and civic responsibility\, are the primary concerns of Abigail Adams. Her requests for legislation to benefit future generations included the necessity of education for all children regardless of sex or color\, as well as the right to self-determination for all individuals including the emancipation of slaves and granting wives equal status under the law. An understanding of her hopes for posterity begs the question: If the founding fathers would have heeded Mrs. Adams advice sooner\, would the nation have been spared years of strife from civil war to civil rights? A conversation with “Dear Abigail”\, 18th century wife and mother provides insight into the concerns of today’s Americans. \n\n\n\nMs. Hanley’s interactive school programs involve audience members who begin with large piles of money that grow smaller with each tax act that the British Parliament passes\, illustrating the economic tyranny the colonials faced under British rule. Abigail contrasts this inequality with a look into an egalitarian marriage of two intelligent\, articulate people who value themselves\, each other and their relationship. \n\n\n\n\nSponsored by America250PA and the Charles Knox & Margaret Etner Foundation.

SUMMARY:History Comes Alive - Harriet Tubman - Deane Center
DESCRIPTION:Head to the Deane Center for the Performing Arts in Wellsboro on Tuesday\, March 24th at 7:30 pm for a History Comes Alive presentation\, “Harriet Tubman” featuring Dr. Daisy Century.\n\n\nBorn Araminta Ross\, Harriet Tubman lived as a slave on a Maryland plantation. Frequently threatened\, beaten\, whipped\, and starved\, Ms. Tubman’s indomitable spirit could not be broken. A Union spy during the Civil War as well as a nurse\, Ms. Tubman directed her consider energies towards humanitarian causes that included women’s suffrage after the war.\n\nDr. Daisy Century considers Harriet Tubman her role model\, someone who encouraged her to put others first and to lead by example. Like her inspiration\, Daisy grew up on a farm\, has a wonderful singing voice and is a determined woman of conviction: once they start a project\, they must see it through to completion. Harriet Tubman reveals a woman who made up her mind as a young girl that things could be better than they were\, “I had reasoned this out in my mind. There was one of two things I had a right to – liberty or death. If I could not have one\, I would have the other.” Tubman shows us a woman who found freedom for herself and then made sure others were brought to freedom. \nSponsored by America250PA and the Charles Knox & Margaret Etner Foundation.

SUMMARY:Kommuna Lux Concert - WCCA Event
DESCRIPTION:One of Europe’s most dynamic performing groups takes to the stage of the Coolidge Theatre for this Wellsboro Community Concert Association presentation on Saturday\, August 23rd when Ukraine’s Kommuna Lux performs “Odesa Gangsta Folk:” thrilling Klezmer music and rowdy speakeasy tunes from their hometown. \nJust as the streets of Odesa are rich with nostalgia and a bohemian Black Sea coastal vibe\, Kommuna Lux’s melodies are filled with dazzling rhythms\, refreshing anarchy\, and plenty of joie de vivre! \nThe group was founded around 2014. Surprised Odessites discovered flash mobs of the “gangsters” making music all around town: the Privoz market\, the old wooden tram line\, the Primorsky Boulevard promenade\, and rusty rocking boats at Lustdorf Beach. This pioneering time was followed by major concerts on renowned stages of the city\, the country\, and then worldwide. \nThis concert is outside of the WCCA 6-Concert Season and is not part of the six-concert WCCA Season
