SUMMARY:“The Pa Wilds by Day and Night” photography by Curt Weinhold
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce the extension of our current Atrium Gallery exhibit “The PA Wilds by Day and Night.” This exhibit is by Curt Weinhold\, a photographer from Coudersport who is well-known for his photographs of the Dark Skies\, as well as local nature scenes. This exhibit will remain on display until Sunday\, June 2nd. Curt says of the exhibit\, “I see my photos as a way to show a piece of the natural world\, encouraging others to appreciate and preserve these resources.” \nCurt Weinhold is originally from Lancaster County\, but after visiting Potter and Tioga counties as a teenager\, decided he wanted to move here. He has lived in Coudersport for more than half his life. When he wasn’t at his 40 hour per week day job\, Curt started taking wedding photographs and doing portrait sessions in his home studio. However\, it was always the outdoors that called to him and his camera. \nCurt has been promoting the special places of northcentral Pennsylvania with photography for many years. Though he traveled to many National Parks\, Curt has always been most passionate about the beauties of what’s now known as the PA Wilds. He enjoys the photographic adventure of searching for wildlife\, wildflowers\, waterfalls and the starry night skies. He wants to show all subjects in the best light\, or the best darkness in the case of the night sky. During the dark of the moon\, Curt often teaches nightscape photography classes at Cherry Springs State Park in Potter County. The darkest place on the East Coast is a magnet for many stargazers. \nAll of his photos in this exhibit are for sale. Some are framed under glass\, and others are printed on canvas. Curt has also brought many prints of his photos\, offering a variety of price points. His photos are also for sale in the Potter County Artisan Center in Coudersport\, where he teaches classes.

SUMMARY:Kitty Crawford Pop Up Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, May 30th\, Kathryn Crawford will return to her hometown as the star of a mini-exhibit on her celebrity life and films. The Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center will host this tribute as a prelude to a Kitty Crawford Festival scheduled for the fall. The display will feature publicity photos\, newspaper articles\, sheet music covers\, and movie stills from her brief career in front of the cameras in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s.\nThe exhibit offers a preview of the Kitty Crawford Festival\, to be hosted by the Gmeiner this fall in coordination with the Kelsey Academy of Tioga\, a county-wide lifelong learning program. Focusing on films about and by Kathryn Crawford\, the festival will premiere director Gale Largey’s latest documentary\, “Love Theft\,” examining a marital crime at the center of divorce proceedings between Crawford and husband James Edgar\, Jr.–a statute still on the books today in some states. In addition\, “Kitty –Grit and Mirrors\,” Largey’s film on the life of Crawford\, will receive a reprise showing. Movies and trailers featuring Kathryn Crawford\, such as “City of Missing Girls\,” “Skyway\,” “Emma\,” “King of Jazz\,” and “Safety in Numbers\,” will round out the tribute to Wellsboro’s own “Kitty.”\nBorn in Wellsboro\, Kathryn Crawford (née Moran) achieved fame as a film star and actress on Broadway and in touring companies. She was known for premiering the song “Love for Sale” in Cole Porter’s “The New Yorkers” (1930)\, and in later years she became an acclaimed interior decorator for the famous\, including Barron Hilton\, Douglas MacArthur\, Herbert Hoover\, and Mary Pickford.

SUMMARY:SURREAL SPACES EXHIBIT
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is thrilled to announce a new Main Gallery exhibit for May “Surreal Spaces” paintings by Anna Lee Hafer. This is Anna Lee’s first exhibit at the Gmeiner\, and we are thrilled to introduce her to a new audience. This exhibit open with a free reception for the public on Saturday\, May 11th from 2-4PM and will remain on display until Sunday\, June 2nd. \nAnna Lee Hafer is originally from Williamsport\, but currently works from a studio in Wayne\, PA. She graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester\, NY in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Fine Art. She relocated to the Philadelphia area to pursue a graduate degree at Temple University and career in studio art. Anna Lee has exhibited at the Finger Lakes Art Series\, the Macfadden Gallery\, NY\, at Lycoming Arts in Williamsport\, PA\, the Rochester Contemporary Art Center\, the Davison Art Gallery\, NY\, Still Point Arts Quarterly Mixing Mediums Show\, the Rush Law Group in PA\, and Roberts Wesleyan College\, NY. Anna Lee has also received a Standard of Excellence Award from the New York State Art Teachers’ Association. \nHer work is heavily influenced by such famous surrealist painters as René Magritte\, Salvador Dali\, and Pablo Picasso\, all of whom strove to build their own realities through small glimpses into a particularly confusing\, but utterly unique worldview that dictates its own specific set of instructions. With references to the laws and physics of Alice’s Wonderland\, the artist challenges the audience’s inherent understanding of perspective\, reality\, and universal order. \nIn her work\, Hafer pours and layers paint to create dimension and texture\, mixing different styles and colors onto each other until they produce a 3D effect. Through marker and pencil that create shadow\, she further enhances these forms and separates them from the background. Heavier layers and thicker brushstrokes in the foreground of her work push the painting toward the viewer\, whereas the thinner layers and small brushstrokes in the background\, elongate the space and push away from the viewer. By juxtaposing interior and exterior elements\, Hafer makes the audience question whether they are looking at something inside or outside. \nOn the last day of the exhibit\, June 2nd at 4PM\, Anna Lee and her mother\, the poet Marjorie Maddox\, will give a presentation on Marjorie’s collection of ekphrastic poetry “In the Museum of My Daughter’s Mind.” This book is based on the experiences of the mother-daughter duo on a rainy-day excursion to the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore\, Maryland\, where\, as never before\, they realized how their passions for art and poetry intersect. Anna Lee’s artwork is featured in the book\, which will be available for purchase at the Gmeiner throughout the exhibit. \nThe Gmeiner is open from 12-6PM Tuesdays through Sundays and is located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro behind the Green Free Library. Admission to the gallery is free.

SUMMARY:CONTEMPORARY BLACKSMITH AND PRIMITIVE PAINTER EXHIBIT
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is very pleased to announce a new Main Gallery exhibit for May featuring husband and wife artists Anthony and Lisa Arkus. Anthony is a contemporary blacksmith and Lisa paints in a quirky primitive style. Locals and visitors may have seen the Arkus’ work at the Laurel Festival or other regional festivals. This exhibit open with a free reception for the public on Saturday\, May 11th from 2-4PM. Light refreshments will be served. This exhibit will only be on display until Sunday\, May 26th. \nLisa and Anthony Arkus live in the mountains of Potter County\, PA with their 2 cats. Lisa was introduced to art at a very early age with an abundance of art supplies and the freedom to create\, which has been a large influence on the self-taught artist she has become.  When Lisa began selling her art full time 25 years ago\, painting was her main medium. She has since begun adding vintage and handmade papers\, along with other mediums. Each piece Lisa creatse is a story in its own right\, a testament to innocence\, the magic of childhood\, and the world of make-believe.   In her spare time Lisa tends to her amazing flower gardens\, which are a source of inspiration for her artwork. \nAnthony began as an apprentice in Vermont in the 1970s\, where he was trained in traditional blacksmithing. Anthony then began his own shop\, creating original designs. Anthony is a full-time blacksmith. creating both functional and sculptural pieces. His original designs are inspired by nature and expressed in metal by hand forging using both ancient and modern tools and techniques\, creating a harmony of design and function. He uses raw materials such as steel\, copper\, and brass\, in bar stock\, sheets\, and plates which are shaped and formed with a coal and propane forge. \nThe Gmeiner is open from 12-6PM Tuesdays through Sundays and is located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro behind the Green Free Library. Admission to the gallery is free.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Morning Musicales Present the Music and Marvels of Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:See the sights of Egypt without leaving Wellsboro. Margery Hoffman and her sister Judith Artley of Framingham\, Mass.\, will present a program for Wednesday Morning Musicales on April 10 at 10:15 a.m. at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center about their 2023 trip to Egypt.\nThe presentation will consist of slides and recorded Nubian music. They will show the ancient sites of this exotic country and introduce some of the ancient musical instruments used to worship the gods.\nThe travelogue will start near Cairo\, at the Pyramids in Dahshur and Giza\, before flying to Luxor to uncover the Valley of the Kings and tour the temples of Luxor and Karnak and Dendera.\nIt’s at the Dendera complex that the audience will be introduced to ancient instruments and the goddess Hathor as well as the dwarf god Bes\, as documented on the temple walls. They will travel by river boat upstream on the Nile River to Aswan to partake in high tea at the Old Cataract Hotel where Agatha Christie was inspired to write “Death on the Nile.”\nNext\, is Nubian music played by instruments documented in Egypt as early as 1300 BC. The mizmar\, a double-reeded woodwind\, is very foreign to western ears. The final stop is the Philae Temple\, relocated between the low dam and the high dam. Like Dendera\, this temple also devoted to worshipping Hathor and Bes.\nThe trip continues to Abu Simbel Temple near the Sudanese boarder to hear a Nubian folk band sing about the displacement of families due to the building of the high dam and Lake Nassar.\nThe Musicales meets on the second Wednesday of each month\, September through May. The organization was formed in 1934 to promote interest in music among its members and in the community. Each meeting showcases local talent. All events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:A GATHERING OF GLASS EVENT AT THE GMEINER
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a reception for the Wellsboro Glass Historical Association “A Gathering of Glass: The Next Chapter.” This event will take place on Saturday\, February 24th from 6:30-8:30PM at the Gmeiner located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro\, behind the Green Free Library.  The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available. \nThe Wellsboro Glass Historical Association is dedicated to preserving the history of Wellsboro’s important role in glass manufacturing. Wellsboro was the site of Corning Glass Works’ first satellite factory\, which opened in 1916. Although it went through several other owners\, it remained open for nearly 100 years. This factory is the birthplace of the famous “ribbon machines” which revolutionized modern glassmaking. When the factory closed\, those ribbon machines were first shipped away\, and then scheduled for demolition. Thanks to a social media post by Ryan Root\, a former mechanic at the factory\, a groundswell of interest in saving the machines arose\, permissions were granted\, funds were raised\, the machines were rescued from the scrapyard\, and brought back home to Wellsboro. \nThis event will serve as a “thank you!” from current members of WGHA to the generous individuals and organizations who helped rescue and preserve the ribbon machines\, such as Shawn Bryant\, GROW\, the DeCamp family\, the Packer Foundation\, the Dunham Foundation\, the Sweet Foundation\, the Etner Foundation\, Joe Shabloski\, Home Page Network\, Charlie Messina and Ben Stambaugh. \nSome of the objects in the WGHA’s collection will be on display for the evening\, and members of WGHA will show how they are currently caring for and archiving those objects. Guests will also have the opportunity to paint their own glass ornament\, led by the steady hand of Mary Wise in the Studio.  This reception is also a chance to let the public know about WGHA’s future plans. Members will share their vision for a permanent museum to house the ribbon machines and other artifacts collected in the last few years. Come find out what the future holds for Wellsboro’s glass manufacturing history!

The opening reception will be held on Saturday\, February 10th from 2-4PM. SUMMARY:IN AWE OF ENGLAND EXHIBIT
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce an opening reception for a new Atrium Gallery exhibit for February 2024. “In Awe of England\, But Happy to be Home” is an exhibit of pastels by Wanda Short of Stony Fork.  The pieces in this exhibit were inspired by Wanda’s recent tour of the British countryside with a knitting group. The opening reception will be held on Saturday\, February 10th from 2-4PM. Light refreshments\, including desserts from Yorkshire Meadows\, will be served at the reception\, which is free and open to the public. \nWanda Short is originally from downstate Pennsylvania. She attended Mansfield College from 1964-1968\, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Art. She moved back to the area in the early 2000s\, first to Galeton\, and then settling in the village of Stony Fork. Wanda has tried her hand at many different media\, but has always loved pastels which bridge the divide between drawing and painting. Wanda studied pastel portraiture with Leo Gilroy in Hershey. She does still create some portraits; however\, her more recent work has focused on landscapes. \nWhen she traveled to Great Britain in May of 2023\, Wanda was awed by the beauty of the country. The Cotswalds are considered an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” in England\, a land of rolling green hills and picturesque towns built of golden stone. Wanda hopes that visitors to her exhibit will be similarly inspired to see the beauty in simple things like a fence\, a fountain\, and the neighbor’s dog. Whether you are venturing out into the world\, or simply appreciating the wonders of your neighborhood\, there is beauty to be found all around us. This exhibit will be on display in the Atrium Gallery from February 10 through March 3. \nThe Gmeiner is open from 12-6PM Tuesdays through Sundays and is located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro behind the Green Free Library. Admission to the gallery is free.

SUMMARY:“Canvas and Clay: Crafting Natures Carbon Story Through Fungi”
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce an opening reception for a new Atrium Gallery exhibit for January 2024. “Canvas and Clay: Crafting Natures Carbon Story Through Fungi” will be an exhibit of acrylic paintings and clay sculptures by children participating in This Is My Quest\, Inc’s outdoor programs. This unique showcase blends the intricate beauty of fungi\, a critical component in Earth’s carbon cycle\, with the creative expressions of canvas and clay. Join us in appreciating nature’s unseen heroes through the eyes of our future conservationists and artists. This exhibit will be on display in the Atrium Gallery from January 13 through February 4. The opening reception will be held on Saturday\, January 13th from 2-4PM. This exhibit not only celebrates the artistic talents of our youth but also serves as an educational journey into the microscopic world of fungi and their impact on our environment. Through their art\, TIMQ’s young artists explore the pivotal role of fungi in our ecosystems\, highlighting their fascinating fruits\, textures\, and colors. Each piece tells a part of a carbon story\, illustrating how these often-overlooked organisms contribute to carbon sequestration and soil health. Many of the items in this exhibit will be for sale. The proceeds of the sales will go back to TIMQ’s junior board to fund future projects for the children.\nThis Is My Quest\, Inc. is a forward-thinking non-profit organization founded with a passion for nature conservation\, outdoor education\, and community engagement. Established with the vision of connecting people\, especially youth\, with the natural world\, This Is My Quest has become a beacon of environmental stewardship and outdoor learning. At its core\, the organization seeks to inspire and educate individuals about conserving natural resources\, understanding wildlife\, and embracing sustainable living practices. Through diverse programs\, including wilderness survival courses\, environmental workshops\, wildlife conservation projects\, and community initiatives\, This Is My Quest provides hands-on experiences that foster a deep respect and love for nature.\nKey to its mission is the empowerment of young people. This Is My Quest offers youth-centric programs that encourage exploration\, adventure\, and learning in the great outdoors. These initiatives are designed to educate and build leadership skills\, self-confidence\, and a sense of responsibility towards the environment. Moreover\, This Is My Quest is active in community outreach\, collaborating with local schools\, environmental experts\, and other organizations to broaden its impact. Through these partnerships\, the organization has successfully brought ecological awareness to the forefront of community consciousness. This collaboration with the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is just another step in spreading awareness. In summary\, This Is My Quest\, Inc. is a testament to the power of education\, adventure\, and community in shaping a more environmentally conscious and engaged society. It continues to grow and evolve\, driven by its unwavering commitment to making the world a better place through the lens of environmental stewardship.

SUMMARY:Mary Wise’s “Art From My Heart” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce an opening reception for a new Main Gallery exhibit for January 2024\, Mary Wise’s “Art From My Heart.” Mary is best known for her intricately painted Christmas ornaments\, but she also works in glass\, clay\, fiber\, altered books and more. Join us in celebrating a retrospective of a lifetime’s worth of artwork by Mary at the opening reception on Saturday\, January 13th from 2-4PM. Family\, friends\, and former students are all cordially invited. Light refreshments will be served at the reception\, which is free and open to the public. Mary will give an artist’s talk at 3PM. This exhibit will be on display in the Atrium Gallery from January 13 through February 4.\nMary Janeski Wise is originally from Antrim. She graduated from Wellsboro Area High School in 1970\, and then received a Bachelors in Home Economics from Mansfield College in 1974. Mary taught Home Economics in the Milton Area School District for 32 years and is very proud of the excellent culinary arts program that she helped build there. Mary has always been interested in art. When she was young\, she loved everything from Van Gogh to the photographs in Game News magazine. When she was teaching\, Mary always volunteered to chaperone trips to museums with the art teacher.\nMary’s journey as an artist began with a desire to paint on cookies. Unsure of her own skills\, she signed up for a tole painting class at the Ben Franklin store in Clarkstown. This class was so popular\, it took her three years to get into it. Mary fell in love with the technique of tole painting. She found it relaxing\, and was overjoyed at being able to finish a project quickly. Soon she was doing craft shows in the Milton area\, mostly painting on wooden objects. Customer requests for glass ornaments led her to take a class on Victorian style lace painting from the PA Mountain Laurel Decorative Painters group in Hughesville. After she retired from teaching\, Mary came back to her hometown. She was encouraged by Charlie Messina to make an annual Wellsboro-themed Christmas ornament\, which she has sold for years at the annual Dickens celebration.\nMary has become very involved in the arts since her retirement. She joined the Wellsboro Art Club about 10 years ago\, and has served as both Vice President and President of that group. She participates in their annual exhibit at the Gmeiner\, helps with receptions\, and has painted many chairs for the biannual “Chair-ity” auction. Mary created a yearly scholarship in memory of her uncle Paul F. Janeski who was a World War II veteran and an artist who specialized in lettering. It is awarded to the Wellsboro High School art student with the best work ethic. Mary has also volunteered with the Wellsboro Glass Historical Association\, and painted one of Hamilton Gibson’s pianos. She also currently volunteers as a docent at the Gmeiner and is on the Art Takeaway Packet committee for Art’s Friends which makes free kits with supplies and instructions for art projects that are given away to children who visit the Gmeiner each month. Mary frequently leads free classes for children in the Studio at the Gmeiner as well. If you can’t find her here at the Gmeiner\, you might see her working on a painting at her other favorite place in town – Dunkin Donuts!

SUMMARY:Writer's Open Mic Night
DESCRIPTION:The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is thrilled to announce the return of the Writer’s Open Mic Nights after a summer break! Writer’s Open Mic Nights will be held on the first Tuesday of each month from September through December. Readings start at 7PM. Come early at 6:30 to sign up for a 10-minute slot if you plan to read. You can BYOB or grab a cup of coffee and some snacks\, and socialize a little with other writers and appreciative audience members. \nThis is a free event\, organized by Ashley Ensminger and Lyndsay Costley\, who usually share a little of what they have been working on as well. This group met for years at Conspiracy Coffee Company in Mansfield\, but moved to the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center this year when the members realized that the majority of them live in Wellsboro. \nYou do not have to be a writer yourself to attend. It’s fine to just come to listen and enjoy! Those in the audience are asked not to record without permission.
