Women in Astronomy—Henrietta Leavitt

April 26 at 6:30 pm

FREE

Hamilton-Gibson is presenting the play “Silent Sky” in May.  This play is about Henrietta Leavitt and her research at Harvard Observatory in the early 1900’s.  Discoveries by Leavitt included how the brightness variability of some stars could be used to measure their relative distance to earth.  This was key to future work on mapping the universe.

Hamilton-Gibson Productions, Commonwealth University-Mansfield, and the Pennsylvania Wilds Astronomy Club will present a program celebrating Henrietta Leavitt’s contributions to astronomy.  The program will include:

  • Brief lecture on Leavitt’s research
  • Scenes from the play by the actors
  • Spring planetarium show
  • Telescope observing in the parking lot afterward (weather permitting)
  • Space-themed snacks

This is a free program, but pre-registration is required.  To register, use the Pennsylvania Wilds Astronomy Club website:  https://pawildsastro.org/events/
